Is it my imagination, or is the dollar rate going up slightly in recent days.
I went through a phase of watching it daily, almost obsessively in fact. Today, walking past the many travel agencies windows, even there they are offering $1.54, and usually they have very poor rates. Has anyone bought recently? Where are the best rates to be found? I know we don't go until August but I'm tempted to buy if the rate seems to peak. I just wish it would go back up to $1.60+ like it did a while ago...

Hi,

Certainly the Marks and Spencer's Branch in Edinburgh seemed to offer good rates ( and commission free) I do not know if one in Presotn ( from your Profile) would have a similar arrangement.

Thanks TBS, do you know, all the time I've been using these boards and I've never investigated the profile button, I know what it does now, you learn something everyday...

:D Bought £200 worth of dollars Saturday at 1.55 from the Post Office for our St Lucia trip in just over 2 weeks:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I was tempted to get some more ready for October at that rate, but am going to see how it pans out over the next few days.

I just got mine today, 1.56 from Marks and Spencer

Thomas Cook were offering a similar rate too.....

I just hope it doesn't go up too much more or I will be regretting buying it now!

Do you have to have a M&S card to buy from them? Plus are you charged commission?

You don't have to have an M&S card and they don't charge commission either so it's pretty good

There was a survey in The Guardian about 18 months ago which showed that M+S was the cheapest for foreign exchange, closely followed by the Post Office. This may be well out of date now, but I've found M+S to be the best of my local FX shops.

Thanks all. I'll keep an eye on the rates over the next couple of months. Fingers crossed that it continues to improve, and you're right Jules, it really hurt when it was in the $1.30s, especially when you consider it was $1.65 only 6 years ago (our honeymoon!)

The first time I ever went to the US (1980 - I was VERY young!!!) the rate was $2.20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remeber my Dad saying at the time that this made it cheaper to go to Miami than Majorca, and that's how I got introduced to Disney!!!

A bit of useless info there for you

;)

if UK intrest rates hold in the next few days expect the pound to edge up the next few days we watch the rate all year round usaly buy when then rate reaches $1.60 to the tourist rate interbank rate is usaly 2.75% higher so if it starts to go higher while on holiday ( we go in 10 days) put it on plastic compensates for the service charge to convert to sterling as we are going 3 times in the next 12 months watch rate all the time
Regards Paulh

It certainly seems to be going up. It was 1.60 this morning.
