I keep reading conflicting information about the dole whip. Can anyone tell me if it dairy free or not. I have my papers from Brenda Bennett at home, but I'm at work and was just wondering if anyone with a milk allergy had one of these safely?

The following is taken from the Wikipedia entry on Dole Whips:

According to precisionfoods.com[2], the following is the actual ingredient list. The list is kept behind the counter at the snack stand and is available upon request.

Sugar, Dextrose, Pineapple Crystals, Partially hydrogenated soybean oil, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Locust Bean, Guar, Xanthan, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Sodium Silico Aluminate, Vegetable Fiber, Citric Acid, Artificial Flavor, Sodium Caseinate (a milk derivative), Mono & Diglycerides, Sodium Citrate, Salt, Dipotassium Phosphate, Artificial Color Including F.D. & C. Yellow #6.

Speaking personally, I'm extremely lactose intolerant, and I eat Dole Whips without a problem -- not counting the weight gain, of course. :lmao:

If you have an actual allergy to milk and not intolerance, I'd avoid it because of the Sodium Caseinate.

That is not good news for me because it has unidentified sources for the gums and the vegetable Fibre as well as soybean oil. Thank you for the information. The sodium casseinate will not cause problems for most people but if a person is very allergic this could cause mild to severe reactions.

Our allergist says to fully avoid anything that might have anything you're allergic to in it. The more you're exposed to it while allergic, the longer you'll probably be allergic. According to her, even if you don't outwardly react to it, it's not helping you to have it. Because fo that, we avoid everything for DS, which stinks, but he is outgrowing everything fairly quickly!

I don't eat Dole Whips because I am allergic to pineapple, but I do eat the Citrus Swirl at another counter in Adventureland. On our last trip, we noticed the citrus swirl is vanilla soft swirl with orange soft serve. My DH had one and said it was like soft serve orange sherbit swirled with vanilla soft serve.
It used to be vanilla soft swirl with orange juice frozen to a soft swirl consistency.
I think that Dole Whips used to be more like that.

I am not sure because I haven't had a Dole Whip, but my MIL has at least one every trip. This thread has some pictures of the Dole Whips. Also, someone on that thread found calorie and nutrition count on the Dole site.
On post 3 of that thread, someone talks about the Dole Whip as pineapple soft serve and says you can also get it as a swirl with vanilla soft serve. That makes it sound to me like it's very similar to the 'new' Citrus Swirl.

Hi, We use to sell Dole whip at our snack bar and just to let you know it comes in orange flavor also so you better make sure you ask them about their orange.

Post 22 says that the distributor says that it is gluten and lactose free. Lactose free is differenent from a total milk free product.

She says she called and verified with Dole that it is GF/CF and includes Dole's phone number.

For me I am coming off too much sugar and trace soy. Now I am craving juices and pineapple. Sigh, it sounds so good and is worth the soy in it.

If it has Sodium Caseinate in it, then it's NOT milk free at all!! Anything with casein in it is a form of milk and anyone who has any issues with any form of milk should stay away from it.

Is this for just the pineapple flavor or does it include the vanilla and/or chocolate?

I am worried about the unidentified items like dextrose, stabalizers, and artificial ingredients. The Vegans have written articles on sodium caseinate and how it legally can be put into "nondairy" drinks and food. It is a heated debate as the vegans buy a dairy free product then find out it has sodium caseinate which comes from a cow.

I found this list from 2004 and wonder even more what are those hidden allergens.

Water, High Fructose Corn Sugar, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Maltodextrin, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Locust Bean, Guar, Xanthan, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Citric Acid, Sodium Caseinate (A Milk Derivative), Mono & Diglycerides, Sodium Citrate, Salt, Dipotassium Phosphate, Articial Flavor, Extractives of Annatto & Turmeric.

At All Ears Anita Answers we get this October 2007 list

Is this for just the pineapple flavor or does it include the vanilla and/or chocolate?

Based on the context of the Wikipedia entry, I believe it's just for the pineapple flavor, but I could be wrong. If you have a serious food allergy, don't make any decisions based on what I just said.

Thanks. :thumbsup2
It's more a lactose intollerance rather than an allergy. 'Regular' soft serve ice cream doesn't sit well with me (no Dairy Queen :sad2: ), but the pinapple Dole Whip is fine. I was hoping that I could branch out to the vanilla or chocolate, but I don't want to chance being sick at WDW.
