So we went a few weeks ago, first trip in a few years. How long has the vanilla dole whip option been unavailable for? And better question; WHY?!

You can do a search, there is a very long thread on here about when this happened, and speculation as to why.

I did a couple of searches and didn't find it (there are tons of threads about dole whips!) Do you recall any of the reasons mentioned? I heard it is still available at the Poly.

I think the vanilla went away in February or March of 2015. I remember they had switched Aloha Isle and Sunshine Tree Terrace right before our March 2015 trip, and that's when the vanilla went away too. I thought it was temporary at the time though. I like the pineapple only anyway:rolleyes1

Vanilla went away to keep the line down. Only one flavor means all machines can be used for the same thing thus faster. Plus you won't get a family of 5 in line when only one person wants a Dole Whip and everyone else just wants vanilla. Another rumor is because Dole Whips are dairy free so it was a cross contamination issue.

Oh noooo...I loved the swirl! We are going to WDW in August, and I was looking forward to enjoying the float with the swirl dole whip. Oh well, I will have to drown my sorrows in the rum version at Animal Kingdom. That was tasty as well!

Ahh, haven't been to WDW in a few years and I do miss the Dole Whip. We just got back from our first trip to Hawaii and had many opportunities to sample their version. Sad to say they didn't match Alhoa Isle even at the Dole Plantation (which was bit of a tourist trap with loads of overpriced merchandise). :(

Wow, that is pretty surprising, and I love the vanilla

Makes sense for a lot of reasons. IIR you can also get a Dole whip in the Poly at the Kona Cafe. This is an easy stop if hoping off the Monorail for drinks.

The swirl was my favorite, but this is the first I am hearing about the rum version at AK! I didn't do as much research on AK (apparently) - off to go figure this out.

Yes! Tamu Tamu at Animal Kingdom offers coconut rum with the Dole Whip. Had one yesterday! Best Dole Whip EVER! They just pour it over, it would be better if blended in. No problem though, just stir it in.

I saw someone with a vanilla swirl at Magic Kingdom yesterday.

Hold on hold on hold on!!! Dole Whip is dairy free???? How did I not know this? I have avoided trying it because I don't handle dairy well. Not allergic, just lactose intolerant. I wish I'd known that when I was there in June! (And February for that matter.)

Pretty sure it is just pineapple sorbet and not a dairy based ice cream. That's what I've been told and being lactose intollerant as well it has never bothered me. Of course I take a 24 hour pill (when I remember and carry fast acting just in case) so I don't have to think about dairy through out the day.

Just double checked and the pineapple does appear to be vegan/dairy free. The vanilla was not and that seems to be what has caused some confusion but even the vanilla was lactose free as it only had a milk derivative not straight out milk.

I don't get the hype about Dole Whip. I love vanilla swirl and was excited to try the pineapple dole whip. Me and my wife thought it was awful! Icy, not smooth. I love both ice cream and sorbet but this wasn't either. Maybe it was a bad batch. Being from UK we have had Italian ice cream/sorbet so good! Maybe it's just a different palette.

I love the sound of a rum flavoured one.
