*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

Thank you!!!!! I really hope I can do it in 2 hours!!!!

I can't believe we are almost there guys! We're all going to kick butt, lol.

Hi all! Sorry I wasn't able to post on Saturday! (or even yesterday or earlier today!!) Things have been hectic here... But onto the race report!

It went well! I love races!!!! Of course it was only my second one.. But it is just so much fun being with a bunch of people all trying to reach the same goal. I just love it!

The event, unfortunatly, wasn't the most orgazined and prepared. They had a record turnout and the traffic and parking was bad. Everyone took their last port a potty stop and then lined up. However, there wasn't any organization to the line up. This was a run and a walk, and everyone was just in one big lump. Walkers and little kids and baby joggers at the start line and fast runners further back...all mixed up.

The race was supposed to start at 8am, and after that time came and went we were all wondering what was going on. They came up on the microphone and told us there was a delay due to the huge turnout, so they were letting everyone park and get in.

A bit later they said it would be a "few more minutes" and then they finally gave some direction to the line up and told the walkers to head back behind the flags. So things shifted and were a bit better. Finally at almost 8:30 they started the opening ceremony, and then the race began.

It was so crowded that we were still only walking even after we crossed the Start line! And as we began to pick up speed we still had to manuver around slower people a ton, it was crazy! And I kept thinking about how much time we were losing. Way too many slower people positioned themselves too close to the Start line... But no one told them where to go, so it was what it was.

Once things spaced out it was nice. The planes were right there, we ran on the runway, it was very cool. It was quite foggy that morning though, so sometimes you could hear the roar of the planes but not see them. It also began to drizzle about halfway through, but not a big deal.

Before we began, I talked to my son about how we would do this. He wanted to stay with me, and I felt like he could probably keep up so I told him to follow behind me. He was doing great, and soon he wanted to speed up. I told him not to run too fast as he might burn out and not make it all the way. But he really wanted to go faster (and I did not) so off he went ahead of me! I was able to see him most of the time up ahead, but lost him in the last mile. I knew he was doing great and I was so happy for him!

So then we pass the last turn before the Finish and I pick up my speed. My dh and other three sons were on the sideline and gave me a cheer. :) Then I saw the clock and said (outloud, hopefully not too loudly), "Oh crap!" It read 30-something. I was bummed it was over 30! Oh well, on to the Finish.

I ran through and found my son waiting for me and he had a huge smile on his face!! :goodvibes He was so happy. He said, "That was FUN! I want to do it again next year!!" I was so excited that he felt that way! I asked him what his time was, he wasn't sure.

We grabbed our drinks and met up with the family, and then we found out that some neighbors of ours were there too! Their 13 year old ran it and he had finished a bit before my son.

We found the results board and here's how we did:
Me: Guntime: 30:57 Actual: 30:30
DS10: Guntime: 29:44 Actual: 29:17

(My dh timed how long it took us to cross the Start line, and it was 27 seconds, so that's how we figured our Actual.) We would have been faster had it not been for the crowd after the Start too... We were SO proud of our son though! He definitely went faster than any of us had anticipated, and who knows what his real potential is without old mom holding him back and no crowd at the Start! :)

Overall it was lots of fun and it made my son want to do more races, and it made me even more excited about the WDW Half!!! So it was a good time!

And now, here we are in November, less than 10 weeks til the big day! :cool1: I began my official training program today, with a great 3 mile run. I'm so excited!!

Ok, next post will be replies...

Sandy: That plan Stan/goofy57 is talking about is the same one I'm doing, here's the link: http://www.marathonrookie.com/half-marathon-training.html

I love Off Kilter's Run Run Away! I'm going to add that to a playlist.

It looks like you have a pretty place to run, nice pictures.

That's interesting/funny about your dh's "screwy shoes"! lol

Keep going, you will get better!!! :goodvibes

Jenny: Great job on the 7 miles! Yeah, upper 50's and cloudy would be wonderful for the half. It could happen! :wizard:

Ronda: Yay for your longest run yet! And just think, that'll only keep on growing! :cool1:

Lynn: Congrats on your great 10K!!! 498 out of 2942 is awesome! You are going to breeze through the half.

Keep it up everyone!!

Pssst! Sandy! (sorry... A Mickey sneaking in here...:tiptoe:)
The marathonrookie plan that liznboys just gave you a link to is the exact same plan that I posted on your pre-TR a week or two ago. I'm using the full marathon training schedule from that site and am so far very happy with it.

... oh, and since I barged in. Congrats!! liznboys and Lynn on your races this week.

(... sneaking back out now... :tiptoe:)

Good morning waddlers!

Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend! I wish I could run times close to what you guys are making. We just signed up for a family turkey trot on Thanksgiving. My training plan has me running 40 minutes that day and I know that the only way I'll get out there is if I've "prepaid" for something. I make everything from scratch and cook for a week, so my training will likely suck leading up to the holiday.

My "long wog" went really well this weekend. I'm encouraged because each week I go a little farther a little faster. I went 5 miles at a 12:30 pace - run 3 min walk 2 min. Last week was 4 miles @ 12:50. I know a lot of my problem is psychological! DH took an "easy" day and came with me - he ran 18 miles on Sat. for his Goofy training.

Right now my problem is recovery. My bad knee decided to flair up after my Sunday run. I had a really bad dislocation 20 years ago and it hasn't been completely right since. I've been OK so far and really thought I'd get through this training thing OK - oh well. It is really stiff and doesn't have a normal range of motion. Yesterday was rest, so we'll see how it goes today. DH tells me that I'm walking like a runner!

Good luck out there - less than 10 weeks to go!
~M.

Liz Awesome 5K report! Glad you got some practice with the crowds. That is what the Donald will be like. We'll walk over the start line and probably have to walk for a bit after as well. It will take several minutes to get everyone spread out enough to move at whatever pace we choose. That is a pain in 5Ks where you want to be going faster from the get go, but it's probably for the better in the half because it will keep us from starting off too fast. Tell DS I said awesome job! You're going to have to get him in cross country! And your time is good too. Remember at the race I don't mind at all if you leave me. I don't do 10 minute miles:) Awesome job!

Dolce You can still hang out here even if you are better than the rest of us with your Mickey goals;)

sk8thingmom Ooh I hope your knee feels better. Those injuries can be pesky. Great job on your long wog. I do a bit of wogging myself. I take walking breaks at least once a mile. I think it really helps maintain a steady time instead of starting off fast and ending up crawling by the end. Remember the tortoise beat the hare:goodvibes

Good morning everyone! Just a quick drive by for me today - Did my 3 miler this morning. Took things slowly to make sure by back and Achilles were okay. Some days I feel like a 100-year-old woman ;) The run went well, except for me overdressing. I should have left my jacket at home - it was too hot!!

Lynn - Congrats on a fantastic time! Yes, I emailed my race results to them last year. Just give them a link to the site with your time and they'll do the rest :) I also brought a print out with me in January just in case but I didn't need it.

Liz - Fantastic RR!! Congrats to you and DS on great times! Maybe you can keep your 2:15 time afterall :)

sk8ingmom - pixiedust: for your knee!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Dolce You can still hang out here even if you are better than the rest of us with your Mickey goals;)

Better? :lmao: I’m jealous of you guys! I did my first half-marathon this past Sunday and had a bad time of it but must carry on and train for 13.1 more miles on top of what I’ve already trained for! I think that a half marathon is a huge accomplishment. I think I’m nuts because I signed up for the full! (Well, that and the Donald was closed by the time I got around to registering.)

I’m just a homeless Mickey butting into Donald threads. It seems that everyone on this message board is either doing the Donald or the Goofy. Where are the Mickey’s? No Mickey love?

I will be in EPCOT the morning of the half cheering all of you guys on. :thumbsup2

Oh, and Lynn: I intended to post this my other post last night.Trust me; at your pace you can do the 1/2 at 2:00:00 or even under 2:00:00. Just be certain that you don't start out too fast. That is the #1 mistake people make. Either tag behind a pace group or have something on you to monitor your pace to be certain that you're running at your normal pace and didn't get swept up in the excitement of the race.

Good morning ducks. My MfM plan is increasing the intra week runs. I've been doing distance instead of time. The hope of a 10:00 mile drives me! It was four miles this morning. It was light by the time I finished! Yea sun! Times were good, too. 12:13, 12:37, 11:57 and 11:23. Going out is away from the creek (slight incline). Coming back is doubling back and getting to glide back down to the valley bottom. Wheee!

No pains, but I'm noticing my calves getting tight during the walks (R3/W1). Need to be a better stretcher ; )

Liz -thanks for the report. The excitement of race day is powerful. Awesome job by your son.

Dolce - turn on the lights and the mice scatter!

sk8thingmom - I second the tortoise thing. Give your knee love and rest! I worry about getting excited.

Ronda

Hey all! I had another good 3 mile run this am (outside in my neighborhood). My times on Monday and today were within 3 seconds, both right around 30:50. Tomorrow is 3 miles again out there.

And then, on Saturday is a 4 miler and I'll be doing that one at the DVC resort in Hilton Head! We're heading down there for a long weekend, Thursday-Sunday. We've never been there before (DVC or otherwise) so it'll be a new experience. There's a gym with treadmill at the resort so I'll probably use that, unless I see a path that looks good.

Have any of you ever been to HHI, specifically the DVC resort there?

Dolce: Mickey's are welcome here too! Especially ones who just did their first half and therefore have lots of tips for us! ;) Thanks for the congrats!

sk8: There's an 8K Turkey Trot here and my dh wants me to do it. I don't think I want to spend time going to a race that day. I'll do my regular Thursday run that morning. But that takes a lot less time than driving somewhere for a race. I'll have cooking to do that day! Good for you for signing up, maybe you will inspire me!
I'm sorry about your knee!! I hope it heals up and leaves you alone!

Jenny: Yeah, I can definitely see being forced to walk in the beginning as a good thing for the Half.
I don't think I'll be doing any 10 minute miles in the Half! I can do them for a measly 5K, but 13.1, don't think so!
Oh, and I like your new avatar and tag!

Vicky: Yeah I don't think the 2:15 will be happening. lol If I were to finish this Half in under 3 hours, I would be THRILLED!!

Ronda: Sounds like you are doing just great! YAY for gliding back to the finish! My neighborhood is pretty hilly and I just love those down hills. One of which is my final stretch back to my house so it's nice.

Keep on moving Donald-Doers!

Have any of you ever been to HHI, specifically the DVC resort there?

When it opened up my DH and I went across the bridge and looked at it. It's really, really pretty. It's also really, really hard to find. You might want to call the resort itself to get exact directions. Hilton Head is very pretty but they don't make anything easy to find because everything has to be within the zoning. You can't even find the McDonalds! LOL Y'all will have a great time. There's some good outlet stores around there too so you can get your holiday shopping done!

I'm glad everyone's training is going so well. I'm very jealous! I've had the worst cold with coughing for the past week and have missed my training. I've got to get back to it soon. I feel so behind!

Looks like I will be joining you guys for the half this year. I was trying to train for the full, but I just don't have the speed to get it done. I am going for a PR in the half instead. I can't wait to see everyone!

Good evening,
My long run for the week is done: 8.75 miles in cool weather (32F). I was alone on the trail, this morning and it was beautiful. The last 10 minutes was difficult but I did survive.
Slowly I am adding to the miles I am doing. I would like to run at least one run of 12 miles just to know how it feels. We will see.
I have new running shoes: the Mizuno wave rider 12 and they are the same green than the hat of the WISH team :cool1:.
Tomorrow is an easy 5k.

Diane

Hello everyone. I will be joining you all in the January for the half. This will be my first time running at Disney and my first half marathon!

Good morning everyone! I'm glad to hear you're all out there pounding the pavement:goodvibes We're coming in on the 2 month mark:scared1:

Liz Have a fabulous time at Hilton Head! I hope you find a great trail to run instead of being stuck on the treadmill for 4 miles. Oh and thanks for the compliment on my avatar. I wanted something to commemorate our BWV purchase (which is totally final):goodvibes

Lauren I hope the cold and cough clear up soon so you can get back out there!

Megan :welcome: That Mickey medal is overwhelming. Go for the Donald this year and maybe by next year the Mickey will seem easier. (That's my current plan)

Diane 8.75 miles:woohoo: At this rate you have plenty of time to build up to a 12 miler. You go girl! And new shoes:cheer2: I love new running shoes:goodvibes

Andrea :welcome: The more the merrier around here! We have lots of first time halfers so you aren't alone.

As for my training, I'm still on schedule. I'm planning on an 8 miler this weekend. Hopefully the weather holds out for me! Everyone keep putting one foot in front of the other:cheer2:

Hey everyone! Did 3 miles this morning. It started raining just after I started and I ended up with soggy shoes. I guess it must have been raining harder than I thought. Usually my shoes only get wet if I run through a puddle.

Liz - I usually run my 3 milers slower than you so I thought for sure you'd be doing 2:15 :) Have fun at Hilton Head!!

Megan/Andrea - :welcome:

Lauren - pixiedust: for your cold! Take care of yourself!

Diane - WTG on your 8.75 miler! I definitely notice the chilly weather too!

Have a great day everyone!

Welcome Andrea! I'm a first timer, too. I started running in January. I've done some short, local runs. I have a 10k next Saturday. I am SO EXCITED about the Donald. It's going to be a blast. What's your plan?

I did four miles this morning. Crisp fall mornings are made for this! Times were okay... 12:07, 12:34, 12:04 and 12:23.

Now to get ready for my parents to visit. :cheer2:

Ronda

hi liz:)

We have a mutual friend(RachelTori) and I have enjoyed 'skimming' this thread;)
You did say any 1/2 marathons...lol..I am so new to all of this....but I have been looking for something...mom of 3 kids at home..16.12.and 3....they announced the upcoming wine and dine 1/2.....I am usually there around that time anyway...

and thought...hmmm...I want to do this!!

First, am not a runner....fast walker yes....who knows, maybe by next Oct I can jog...lol...started a spreadsheet to start recording my times...

great tips on this thread and everyone is so nice:)

Pssst! Sandy!

:tiptoe:)

Hey there - anywhere you hang out is fine by all of us!! You do have great tips - and thanks for reminding me! I just was in the mood to compare stuff - and I'm on a different computer!!

The best tip is to pace - I havent figured that out yet - but That's something I've been thinking long and hard about!

Ronda "turn on the lights and the mice scatter" :rotfl2:

Liz Your experience is exactly why its a great idea to enter a few races - and the Donald will have the same sort of problem - the congestion at the start line! They will have a couple of start times (the different corrals) I think they do the fireworks twice (the last corral is really far far back!!) But for at least a half mile its really elbow room - and crossing the start - its total walk. stop. walk. stop. stop.... stop... nudge. walk... ok there's the start... moving a bit more... bit more...

Glad your ds had a great race!!

:welcome: Andrea and Megan :welcome:

Liz HH sounds like a great time!! Have fun!!

Diane I hear the Mizuno is one of the top rated shoes - love the color!!

Lauren hope you're feeling better!!

I guess I'd better gear up for an 8 miler!! I know the mistakes I made in '08 (stopping for pictures, not training seriously, having too much stuff hanging on my fanny pak - and not doing an even pace - 12 min to 18 - 20 min miles!!)

I dont have a gps/garmin timer nor do I have a pedometer... I've just been "winging" it - I use the google trail maps to figure out app how far I woggged... When I did my "long" 5 miler I figured I must've done 18 min miles which totally depressed me... (it was cold and very windy that day!)

Yesterday I got out and did 3 and a half miles (thought I was doing 4) and my time had me at 14 min miles...

so I'm a very confused wogger...

I do want to finish "officially"... but its tough mentally on me.
