Doing B/W prints

I've got some photos that I desaturated and touched up. I want to get them printed and when I sent them to a photo lab (cheap, yes...bleh), the black and white photos came back crappy. They had overexposed it so much that all my nice little shadows and detail were gone. I had vignetted them and none of that remained. Not only that, but the photos were tinted a slight shade of something. They weren't true black and white.

My monitor is calibrated.

Where can I get these printed out so they're truly black and white and where they won't play with the exposures...print them as I actually want them.

If possible, a place in Canada would be nice. LOL

Can you post a picture that you sent to be printed and perhaps take a picture that they sent you?

I like www.mpix.com. They have photo paper that is specifically for BW images that is very nice.

Not really...you won't be able to see the tinting since scanning it or taking a photo of it won't really show what the eye sees. Suffice to say, the worst thing is the loss of definition due to them printing it overexposed. It's been lightened up.

Update: I sent the same images to Costco's lab, clicked on the "do not autoadjust" box (that the other place didn't have) last evening after writing the original post. Picked up the photos today and am very happy with the results. And...they were cheaper!
