It's been a ROUGH month. We're still displaced after the flood, one of my cats was just diagnosed with cancer and died last week, Mike and I have had one heck of a last few weeks.

To top that all off our trip to Savannah for Thanksgiving was cancelled because my aunt, who has done the family Thanksgivings since my Mom died, was just diagnosed with lung cancer....:guilty: She more like my sister because she grew up in our house when I was growing up. I actually like her BETTER than my sisters!! She's having a big Thanksgiving dinner and we HAVE to go, don't know how many more we will have... :sad1:

Well, I've decided to pack up on Black Friday and go to Savannah AFTERwards. I've been there 3 times before, I LOVE the city, but was wondering if anyone here has any ideas?

Any favorite hotels, tours or places to eat? I've been to Paula's place and to the Pink House, love them both!

Thanks in advance!!!

I'd like to hear some suggestions, too- we will be in Savannah in January for a soccer tournament, and would like to experience some of what the city has to offer while there.

Hyatt Regency!!! Beautiful hotel and it overlooks the river right in the historic district. You can take an elevator right down to the Riverfront and stroll till your heart's content.

At the opposite end of Riverfront is an old cotton mill that was converted into a nice inn. Can't remember the name right off. Sits directly above Houey's.

You should also check out the Pirate's House if you haven't already. Seems it's often closed due to renovations or some such. Great history there. :thumbsup2

This is the perfect time to visit...not too hot. Sure wish I could be tagging along. ;)

ETA: They may seem "cheesy" but many of the bus tours are great! Different ones stop at different places and you have the opportunity to see inside some gorgeous places!

We live about half an hour from Savannah. Don't get over there as much as we'd like but it's a great little city!

Any info you could share about the group going? Might better help me give you some info. If you don't want to put it out here, you can always PM me and I'll try and help you out. :goodvibes

Robin, I'm so sorry to hear about your aunt. I will lift her up in prayer.

We stayed at the Savannah Hilton DeSoto in the historic district and loved it. Very easy to walk around the area and down to the riverfront. There are lots of little shops, restaurants and bars down on the river.

One of our favorite places to eat is Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House..they have the best fried chicken!

I also would recommend taking the hop-on/hop-off trolley tour. The tour narrators really do a good job of telling you about the local history and explaning all the historical sites throughout the city. If you have any young girls with you, they might be interested in visiting the Juliette Gordon Low house, the founder of the Girl Scouts. My daughter really enjoys visiting there and it's a stop on the trolley tour.

Also, don't miss visiting one of the candy kitchens on River St. for some fresh pralines!

We were in Savannah last spring and stayed at the Avia Hotel- great place close to the waterfront and right around the corner from Paula Deen's restaurant

Wow! Thanks for all the responses!!

It'll just be me and my 16yo son. We love the city and he is a BIG history buff, he even took his Georgia history class there in middle school!

Love the bus tours! The Hyatt is available thru Hotwire for a great price, thanks for the review!

Thanks, Elisabeth... she's a tough cookie, I pray she will be fine!

LOL, I've got orders for the River St. Candies already! My favorite tour is the on and off tour, it's the best way to see the city!

Thanks for the review of the Avia, a brand new hotel, right? I might check that one out!

Thanks, everyone!! :thumbsup2

We're planning a trip over Christmas! Just wondered if/where you ended up going and if you or anyone else has any suggestions.
thanks!

Dang, I ended up NOT going. My aunt just recovered from Lung cancer and we threw her a celebratory Thanksgiving. Couldn't leave town for that!!!

May go after Christmas, so you'll have to let ME know!:thumbsup2

So we've booked the Avia hotel. Looks really cool...nice and new...and from what I can tell is close to everything in the historical downtown. Pricing was $135 per night for 2 queen beds (I can't believe how many hotels have 2 doubles - not enough space for our family of bedhogs) so affordable for a hotel of this class. I'll let you know what the trip was like after we get back!

We just got back from Savannah a couple of weeks ago. Some suggestions:

1. Eat at the Pirate House. In fact, do a Ghost tour on one of the trolleys that includes the meal at the Pirate House. That was so much fun!

2. I may get flamed for this, but SKIP the Lady and Sons (Paula Deen's restaurant). We thought the food was just OK, but very pricey. Of course, it may be because I'm from the South, and have been eating fried chicken and baked mac and cheese all my life, but it just didn't seem all that special.

3. Spend some time in the cute stores and restaurants along the Riverfront.

4. Do a house museum tour. We did the Davenport house, it was very good and not very expensive. Not a big house, but the tour guide was really good. Or go to Juliette Gordon Low's house or the Andrew Low house (she was the founder of the Girl Scouts). We did that on a previous trip.

Great suggestions! We're really looking forward to this trip now!

Did you do the buffet at Lady and Sons? I loved it!! My family is from the south also and I've eaten that food since birth but lost my dear Mom in 2002 and I felt like she was in the kitchen!! :flower3:

Robin I've always wanted to ask you, being a Brooklynite, did you ever learn to say "Joe-Juh?";););)
