Dogs with Arthritis - Thanks Update page 2

I have been having this problem with my dog (15yo cocker) wondering what it could be, was going to call the vet on Monday because she has been getting worse, stumbling and slipping I can tell it is in her back legs and hips but wonder would she be able to take anything as she is also taking lasix and enalapril for heart problems, so will probably check with reqular vet as well as cardoligist vet

Thank You! I will start my dog tonight and hopefully she will be feeling a little better soon...

Linny -- glucosamine and chondroitin seem to be side-effect-free, but you're right in asking the cardiologist first. Cockers do seem to have a lot of hip problems. When are you due for x-ray rechecks on the chest? Maybe you can get hip/lumbar rads at the same time. If slipping is the first sign, it might be a spinal cord/other neuro problem.

Thanks Doc,
She doensn't go back to the cardo. untill Jan. She has been doing so well I only have to take her every 6 months now. She really isn't slipping it is just if she tries to turn fast she seems to stumble. But this is something I will look into

Linny, it might also be her ears. Be sure and have those checked out too.

My old Sammy started doing that, but it turned out to be a neuro problem.

Thanks everyone, I did get the glucosamine and that seemed to help some but finally got her to the Vet and he gave her rimadyl and she's feeling much better. Just a couple of days and I can tell a big difference. She's up and around more, the puppy isn't knocking her over and she's wagging her tail :) Almost perky. Just keeping my fingers crossed that she has no reaction so we can continue it.

We all went so we had 4 people and 3 dogs. Worked out great, needed DH because the older one needs help getting in and out of the car.

She has a tooth that is infected, the vet gave us an antibotic and said she may need surgery for that but hopefully the med will work for it. She would hate to have to go there all day and they'd have to put her under to extract the tooth.

She has also lost even more weight that I thought. Really not doing good in that department. I'm going to get some special food for her and try to fatten her up. Our other dog is bordering on obese so we'll have to make a special time for the older dog to have her treat without interruption.
