Dogs Burning the Grass

How do you keep your dogs' urine from burning the grass? I've "trained" mine to go in one spot on wood chips but as soon as I'm not watching them, they run straight to the yard to do it on the grass. UGH

We tried the tabs sold at pet stores but those didn't work. I've even heard of a little vinegar in the water but think that would taste terrible and haven't tried it.

What has worked for you? Anything? Or am I stuck watching them outside for the rest of my life?

Get "boy" dogs. ;) Actually, I find some foods burn more than others. I found that Nutro was more likely to burn, Iams less. I feed Jude Canidae lamb and rice and he has one shrub he burned. If you see them go in a certain spot you can water it in. That might help.

My boy dog has the urine of death, my girl does not, so that doesn't follow your logic here.

Can't help you but I would be interested to hear if others here have the same issue?

I was initially told that only the females burn the grass; however, my one female does while my other female and male do not. Who knows, I just want it to stop.

You may be onto something w/the foods. Now we need to find someone who's found the right one!

I would love to know too. Our dog is trained to go in a small rocky area by our house, our neighbor's dog loves the middle of our yard. Now that the snow is gone, we can see where the grass is burnt. A fence is going up ASAP, but we'd like to minimize the damage to our lawn (DH and I both spoke to the neighbor, she doesn't seem to care).

We had 3 female dogs at one time and none of them burned the grass from urine. We have fed them and continue to feed one of them Science Diet WD. The other food we had them on was chicken, rice and green beans which I cooked up for them 3 times a week.

 I didn't know dog urine killed grass. We've had boys and girls, but no dead grass.

My yard looks like I have had an alien invasion by tiny spaceships.:lmao:

Oh, dear. That would drive my husband over the edge. He loves his yard.

If he'd only put in a tiny fraction of the effort he puts into the yard, into the inside of the house.

Right?!?!

Anyways, I'll have to try the tomato juice. (Science Diet is so expensive and I barely have time to cook for my family let alone the dogs LOL!)

I just wish they would go where they're supposed to go (in the wood chips). They'll do it when we're out there but will sneak to the grass as soon as we're not looking. They're ruining it for themselves b/c DH fenced them off from the grass unless we're out in the yard which is almost never unless it's the summer.

My previous male dog was a grass burner. My 2 current females are not burners. We once asked the vet what we could do or use to stop the burning. He said it was th pH level of the pee and that any of the products or remedies for burning could be dangerous to the dogs health. We just trained the dog to pee in a certain area and invested in alot of scott's lawn patch.

You have to soak the area with water almost immediately after they have done their business. This will prevent the grass from burning up...once it is burned - you need to dig up the soil and toss it...then replace with clean topsoil - or you could wait a few weeks and try to Miracle Gro it back to health.

I have used the pee pills for about 3 years. They work. They do take time to work, I think about a month before we noticed the grass getting better. Our dog(s) were/are female. We had one put down last May. I'd rather have dead grass then be without her :sad1: But it was her time, 16 years old :sad2:

My boy dog pees like a girl. I guess he has an identity issues.

We tried tomato juice and it didn't work for us. I hope it works for you.
