Dogs at DL

I had a question, are dogs aloud into Disneyland park? I know dogs that are being trained for the blind and such are aloud. But on my last couple of trips to DL I've seen smaller dogs walking around.

Also are dogs aloud in Downtown? I recently saw a couple of security guards talking to a lady with a small dog and asked her to leave. Is this a new rule? I've taken my dogs Downtown in the past when we ate at one of the outdoor resturants and never had a problem before.

Dogs are not allowed in the parks unless they are certified service animals, but yes, I've seen people with purse dogs walking around. I can't imagine, we have a mini doxie and no way would we carry her around the parks all day....how boring for that poor doggie.

I would think that only service animals would be allowed into the parks, but I did see people with dogs walking around DTD. I don't know what the official DTD policy is but I saw quite a few on my May 25-30 visit.

Pardon the pun...but that is my PET peeve. :lmao: I hate when people "sneak" their dogs in purses into stores, restaurants, malls!!!

I tend to only take my dogs to DTD during the fall season since it's less crowded. I've just noticed recently a lot of non service dogs inside the park recently. I believe about 5 seperate times, n I wouldn't say these were purse dogs i.e. 10lbs or less. These dogs are like 20-30lbs, n non of them where wearing a service dog vest.

I don't mind so much, but I was shocked in November when we were at ESPN Zone and they allowed a dog in, with a big party. It wasn't being quiet even. I'd love to bring my dogs with me, but I respect the laws. As I said, I was shocked that they allowed the dog in.

And sorry to take a jab at the OP, but especially with what I just said, this dog was "aloud." Pluto on the other hand is always quiet at the parks when I see him. ;)

That's such a shame for the little animals! What a boring day for them. Being carried around in a purse all day. Specially on a hot day gees! There is a reason they have a pet sitting service right outside the main gates of DL. I am sure with all the care they put into the park your pet would be well cared for during the day.

If a dog is in the park it is a "service dog". Not all service dogs seem to wear vests these days, something that I think should happen so people don't mistake pets for service dogs.

What service dogs are used for these days is VERY open so you see all types of dogs. I will not get into some of my opinions so as not to derail this topic. But I think some basic training would be so great for all service dogs (passing the companion dog training course for example) so things like loud dogs in public places doesn't happen or nipping which I have sadly seen :(

But no pets are not allowed in DL and would not be allowed to sneak in either. The dog in ESPN would have had to be a service dog as well since only service dogs can go inside restaurants.

A while back I watched a Dog Whisperer episode where a woman was trying to get her dog certified as a service dog because he helped her during panic attacks. He had a series of tests he had to take and had trouble with passing one so that is why the DW was called in. So, it seems like they can be any type of dog, but must pass these tests. I don't know what type of proof owners have to show to get them in though. :confused3

There is also not a universal certification for service dogs so while some may be tested and trained others might have nothing but a service dog vest. Many small dogs are being used these days for Panic Disorders, Depression, Seizures and more so they can be of any size and breed since they don't lead or need to do physical work like some service dogs.

Small lap dogs are often service dogs for people who have blood pressure concerns or seizures. The dogs can detect changes in human bio-rhythm before the danger levels occur - and alert the human. Amazing animals.

Blood pressure??? Now that I had not heard of how cool is that! Dogs are so amazing!

There's really no such thing as service animal certification. OK there might be, but it's not required AT ALL for an animal to be legally considered a service animal.

Yes it's nice to have a dog with some basic training. Yes I wish there was some sort of vest. But it's not legally required at all.

So you can just assume that any dog (animal) you see in the parks is a service animal of some kind. I found out while dealing with neighbors who had a dog that was VERY obviously NOT a true service animal, but the woman knew how to work the system. It's hard to be of service to a human if the human NEVER takes the dog with her, ya know? Anyway, in researching the subject to see if there was anything at all we could do (just record the bad behaviour until the apartment complex had enough to show that the dog was indeed a serious danger to others...since a service animal isn't considered an animal on apt leases, you have to basically prove that the furry family member is a danger) I found all that out.

I personally am happy that they don't put more limitations on those who need service animals, even though for us it meant we moved from a loved apartment so that we weren't in danger anymore. My life is much nicer since I just see animals in places where they shouldn't be, and just assume that it's a service animal. :)

Me too. Dh is allergic to most dogs and can almost immediately tell when one is in the vicinity. He takes his pills when he knows we are going to someone's home with a dog etc..., but doesn't take one when we go shopping. There's been several shopping trips we've had to cut short because dogs were roaming stores with their owners. Open spaces are not an issue because dh can walk away, but it's difficult in enclosed spaces.

I have to say that working at DL and having a sister who owns/trains smaller service animals....there is no way anyone could sneak in a dog to DL itself...maybe DTD if they are discreet. When I go places with my sister, we often have 2 dogs (one that we have is certified and the other is in training.

Dogs in training will sometimes bark, it does not mean that they aren't "real" service animals. It just means they may be young or new to the training process. The only way for them to get better is to keep taking them to public/crowded areas so they get used to things. For example, our one dog who is now 100% certified used to bark during fireworks...they scared her as she didn't know what they were. We just continued exposing her to the noise and she learned that they were OK and not a threat.

I have gotten some really nasty comments/rude remarks about our dogs and it is sad that people only think of seeing eye dogs as service animals. Luckily most cpmpanies are really good about seeing the vest or ID tag and realizing that this is not a pet we are trying to sneak in but a legitimate service animal...our dogs always wear vests unless it is reaaaally hot. Unfortuantely they are puffy so the vests aren't always easily seen!

BTW I don't know what the laws are in other states but in CA we have had to go through a very intense program that usually lasts 2-3 years depending on how yound the dog is and how quickly they pick things up! Canine Good Citizen Testing, obedience classes (usually once a week for the duration of training), and "field work" taking the dog to restaurants, theme parks, malls, trains, planes, and hotels. It really is a lot of work and not easy!

Hopefulyl this helps clear up any confusion or misunderstandings!

wow, i find it very hard to believe that dogs would be allowed inside disneyland. i mean, aside from the fact that one would think disneyland management wouldn't want animals relieving themselves on the grounds (ick!), you'd think the biggest reason they wouldn't was because they'd be held legally liable if any of those dogs hurt anybody. i don't know about everyone else, but i would SURE AS HECK sue disney if me or one of my kids got bitten by a dog at disneyland.

i don't hate animals or anything, but dogs are one of the LAST things i want to see while i'm at disneyland. sheesh! :scared:
