Dog sitting was not what I thought it would be like

Ah, a 1-1/2 year old Golden -- probably about 6 more months until maturity kicks in. We always said that was when the brain arrived. Ours was quite the goofball until he was two. I can totally see where experience with a Golden wouldn't necessarily translate to a Yorkie.

Yeah we are hoping two will be the magical number for her. She is starting to mellow out already so hopefully that is a good sign. Her teenage years were pretty bad in terms of jumping and bratty barking when she thought you weren't moving fast enough to tend to her needs lol. Golden and yorkipoo puppies are definitely nothing alike!

The last two times I had a puppy, each time, about a week or two in, I got a bad case of "What was I thinking!" :headache: But you keep plugging away and somehow, things get better and soon you can't remember what life was like without them. That's sort of what this reminds me of. OP, glad to read updates. :flower3:

I had German Sheperds all my life and last year I got a Cairn Terrier. Overall I didn't find it very different. I mean, it's nice to be able to pick him up and The grooming blows my mind, but I think mostly the principles of house training and socializing, etc., were pretty similar.

I love the story a pp told of the dog with the candy and almonds! :faint:

OP I have a 1 1/2 year old german shepherd and a 1 1/2 golden retriever :cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9: I agree. They are the best  bigger dogs in my experience have been easier to train. I don't have much patience for small dogs, my aunt has a Chihuahua, he has zero training..I even tried for a while and gave up. The dog just wants to do what he wants to do. He also uses a litter box so I'm reluctant to even refer to him as a dog :upsidedow Hope you make it through the next few days with any patience you have left at this point. when we got our GSD first as a 8 wk old puppy I wondered what the heck I was thinking, within a few months of training I was in love and got another puppy right away. Best decision I ever made. They are BFFs. Couldn't imagine a little dog though. Nope. Not for me.

Thank you to those who understood that I was just super frustrated and overwhelmed by the demands of this little dog when I posted this weekend. Venting and getting my feelings out did help a lot and allowed me to get back on track. Today marks the second day with no accidents and she even rang the bell to go out to poop! :dogdance: I think she is starting to assimilate into our household and have caught on to our routine. My golden is still super tired from entertaining the puppy and the puppy is still as barky and energetic as ever. Don't worry- my dog gets a lot of alone time from the puppy each day. But there are times now where she'll just snuggle up to my dog and they'll both take a nap. So cute! They are still sharing and playing well together. We are still trying to get her to stop jumping/pawing at us/my dog when she wants attention. I've noticed small dogs tend to do that when they want your attention.

I will let the parents know when they come back that she had a difficult time for the first week and that she had quite a lot of accidents. Whether it be stress or a need for more potty training they can decide on that themselves. In the end, I really don't know how much training this puppy has had and at this point, it really doesn't matter any more. She now knows sit and lie down. We discovered yesterday that she knows how to roll over! Whenever we ask her to do a command like "paw" she rolls over. Basically if she has no idea what you want, she rolls over lol. And teaching her how to walk well on a leash is a lost cause. It does take time to teach so I'll suggest to the parents that they might want to work on it. She also has separation anxiety which I'm not sure her parents recognize because they did acknowledge that she cries when they leave for work. They can probably work on helping her conqueror that. I don't think I ever said this but her parents are first time dog owners who wanted to get a goldendoodle but ended up with a yorkipoo when they saw her in a pet store. I learned a lot with my first dog and I'm sure they are in the same journey.

While this has been difficult at times, I did learn a lot about little dogs and their needs. It's definitely been interesting but not something I want to repeat. She'll definitely be back for play dates but no more sleepovers for sure. I don't feel that stressed anymore and for that I'm grateful. I can actually sit back and enjoy the company of "my" dogs. :flower1:

Your golden is 1 1/2 years old, perfect time for another golden puppy :flower3::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::cloud9:

When they get back you should tell them about the experience and tell them that even though you said you didn't want anything for your time, you really would like for them to pay to clean your floors professionally. Hopefully they are amenable to this.

In general, smaller dogs have more accidents in the house than large dogs (please no one throw tomatoes at me).

Anyway, I don't think there is much you can do about this but just count the days until the owner's return, as you already are.

However, I would tell the owner that the dog had 'accidents' in the house and cried all the time. Maybe he/she will get the message that their dog needs to be in a kennel next time, or with an individual who is aware of this dogs separation anxiety and issues and understands up front before they say 'yes' to boarding the yorkipoo.

Personally, I think it is somewhat pushy or rude to expect a friend to watch your pet for longer than one or two days.

Just wait it out at this point.

What happened when the owners came to get their dog? Did you tell them what a struggle it was? Did they bring you a gift? And do you miss the little critter just a little bit? :dog:

Lol when the yorkipoo left on Sunday with a family friend of theirs (they were flying in late that night), we are just sat and took in the silence. When my hubby saw the owner at work, he did tell her about the accidents and that we think she has separation anxiety. The dog cried in the crate and when one of us left her presence. On the last day of her stay, she was so anxious when one of us went downstairs that she squeezed through the baby gate! The owner was surprised to hear that the dog cried so much but did admit that they leave the dog out to roam the house when they go to work. When my hubby came home and told me this, I was a bit surprised because I had asked specifically if the dog was crate trained since I knew she will be in the crate when no one is in the house to watch her. So I guess she wasn't as used to her crate as we thought she was. It didn't sound like she had much of a reaction to the news she had accidents. They did bring us some unique gifts from their home country so that was nice. I feel terrible saying this but nope don't miss the little critter one bit lol. Think we learned a valuable lesson and won't do this again. My hubby came home one day after work recently and said his boss wanted to see if we were interested in watching her puppy for a few days but decided not to ask once she heard of the hard time we had :P.

Just saw the update. I'm glad the dog is gone. Sounds like the owners didn't give a hoot if you were having problems with it. Hard lesson.
