Does anyone own a Chinese Crested, Italian Greyhound or Kerry Blue Terrier? If so, tell me about your dog. Post a pic, if you can....:D I'm looking into getting a dog and I need input on these breeds. Thanks!

I have a mixed breed dog. No photos to share, sorry

I don't have any of those breeds. My puppy is in my avatar.:)

Aren't the Italian Greyhounds small dogs?

Thanks....:D I've been to these sites, as well as AKC.

I'm looking for an allergy friendly dog and these are some of those breeds. I would like to hear from DISers who may own any of them.

The IG looks really neat, but they might be a little hyper for me. I really like the Chinese Crested, but Chris isn't impressed.

Well, I love my lab mix, but if we were to get another dog someday I would really like a labradoodle. It's a fairly new breed mix of a poodle and a labrador. They're supposed to have the disposition of a labrador (great, friendly family dogs), and the dander/coat of a poodle (good for people with allergies). Just thought I'd give you another option.

Just a note on the so called "labradoodle"....I can't imagine that every pup will come with the above mentioned "mix" of characteristics. Genetically speaking, you may get some, but I would imagine you would also get some with the opposite and some that are less "evenly split" between the 2 (ie. some more poodle-like, some more lab-like.).

Italian Greayhounds and Chinese Cresteds are both small (toy group I believe). The Kerry Blue seems like it's more what I'd call mediumish. Grooming of a terrier is more than some realize, although I don't know specifics on this one. Also, Terriers all seem "more difficult" personality wise to live with they tend to be very active and demanding, IMO. Many love them, so it depends on your personal wants.

As for Chinese Cresteds (the hairless variety)....I think they are quite neat looking. We see them a dog shows...to me they look like a very miniature pony....with the mane and leg "feathers". There was an article on them in a recent Dog World(I think Feb). I'll try to did mine out and look for "tidbits" of interest for you.

Have you looked up the "Parent Club" websites for each of these breeds? There should be good info for you there. I would also encourage to attend a show in your area and look up each breed in the grooming area. Talk the owners and breeders...they will be a wealth of info for you. If that is of interest to you, let me know and I can help you find one in your area! And give you some tips on attending if you haven't ever been. It is a great place to see the breeds in action - should really help with the decision process!

Speaking of Labradoodle, I have a Goldendoodle (Golden Ret. X Std. Poodle), she does not shed and is good for those with allergies, I have allergies to cats & some dogs & my Grandmother is allergic to everything & has asthma, Annabelle does not bother us at all. She is a clown of a dog. She is expected to be around 60 lbs., there are also mini-goldendoodles, but may be harder to find. There is a website, Goldendoodles.com that has tons of info. and also has a discussion board (on both golden & labradoodles), you can ask tons of questions and just like the DIS, everyone is more than happy to help. To get to the discussion board, you will have to click onto "resources" and then "discussions board". If you are interested, there is also a section on the website where those with both Golden & labra doodles have entered in the coat type their dog has - curly poodle-type or wavy more golden type, if they shed, breeder, etc. Annabelle has a long wavy coat, which is what we wanted. Sorry. I have no info on the dogs mentioned, but since someone mentioned Labradoodle, just thought I'd put in my 2 cents. The only problem we've had with her (was in the beginning) has been puppy nipping/biting, but now that her "big girl" teeth have come in, she has stopped doing that, she just needs her chew bones. Good luck in your decision, and I hope no one starts bashing me on why pure bred dogs should not be bred to one another, in our case it was best - due to allergies.

Heather, the article on the Cresteds is in the AKC Gazette, not Dog World. Sorry, I got my magazines crossed!

Here are few comments from it on "living with a crested"....

"Their affectionate personality makes Cresteds devoted "people dogs" who can be very demanding of attention". It goes on to say that they need to be "with" their people (much like my Sammies who follow us from room to room!). A breeder is quoted as saying, "This is a breed that is full of fun-they are loving, playful and even tempered." It also says that breeders commented on their high intelligence and that harsh training methods are a "no-no", rather lots of praise and treats are needed for a "successful relationship". HOpe that helps!

Here up some links to the different breed clubs(national).

Kerry Blue Club

Chinese Crested Club
Italian Greyhound Club

All have a breeder referal and info on the breed.

Also here is a link on IG site about buying a puppy and it seems relevant for any breed. Buyer Be Ware

I've read through the parent club sites. I love the KBTC site. I just don't think I want to groom a dog that much. This would be my first dog. The crested just seems so neat. Chris says it looks like a frou-frou dog that a supermodel might carry around. I think it would be best for my allergies. And it's smart. I love brainy creatures....:D

My boy is a mutt as well. Cross between a Black Lab and a Vietnames Pot Belly Pig! LOL! His pic is under my name to the left.

Definitely the best dog in the world. Or at least in mine.

Kerry Blue owner here, and I live somewhat near you! ;)

Ours is almost 9 months old, and he is a great guy. As far as grooming goes, they do need brushing every 3 days or so. They will also need to get a haircut every 6-8 weeks. One of the reasons we got him was because of my daughter's allergies. She has had no problems at all.

You will need a fenced yard because they need exercise. It's not good to go with the invisible fencing because it can cause aggression problems in the breed. The fence also keeps your dog safe from other dogs wandering into the yard if you had the invisible fence.

Our Kerry is very laid back. Sure, he's all puppy when someone comes home, but he's laying behind me right now just napping. I work from home, and he's always by my side just hanging out.

I would not suggest this breed if you are out of the house all day. They really need interaction with their owners and lots of play time, especially at a young age.

There is an agility show going on this weekend up GA400. There is a local couple that have 3 Kerries, and they will be there with at least 2 of their dogs this weekend. Their one girl will be competing, and their young guy is just getting started with agility. They are a wealth of information about the breed, and they have been our mentors all through this process. I'll PM you with their website.

Please holler if you have any more questions about Kerries.

This weekend! Oh no! I have a DIS Meet tomorrow afternoon. I could do something during the day. Sunday is shot, as I'll be singing. When and where is the show?

I've PMd you with the info. The show runs pretty much all day. I think they start about 8 AM. You could probably run out there and see a few runs and still make the meet.

If you give the local breeders a call this evening, you could probably arrange to chat with them a little bit at the show. They'll know when their dog is competing tomorrow and you can see if your schedules mesh.

My cousin has an IG. He is very sweet but has a lot of alergy (skin) problems and is on puppy ritalin. He can't stand the cold so she has to put a coat on him when he goes out to do his business.

Glad to see you are getting good feed back here! Didn't realize you are from GA....we were thinking of doing a show down there in Apr. and combining it with a vacation. Does't look like it's happening though...need to save DH's vacay time for other things.

I'd read that about IG's. They hate the cold. Can't say that I blame them....:D

We have a Lowchen which is rather rare in the UK, he looks like a minature Old English sheepdog. (We don't have him cut in the show cut)

He doesn't shed hair, and is great for allergy sufferers. He is very clever and playful and has a brilliant temperament.

Just another suggestion
