Hello all -

We are planning a 2 night trip to DLP for this July. We are doing an extended trip to Europe and we will be traveling with our Cavalier King Charles - approx 14 lbs and he is actually a certified Psychology Service Dog.

Are DLP's dog kennels up and operating now? Anyone have experience with the kennel? From what I have read it is similar to Disneyland Ca. kennel in that you must come and take your dog out for breaks, etc. which is certainly fine by us!

Has anyone here have a dog that they have taken to the DLP hotels? We are thinking of staying at the Newport.

Thank you for any advice!

He's for my daughter: she doesn't need him most of the time: usually at night for severe anxiety; ie he doesn't go to school with her. A place as packed as DLP is a much different experience for a small dog than normal city life and I think it's better for him and for other guests at DLP if he is in a kennel! If there's a problem he'll be pretty close by.

Just something to note, have you checked about bringing the dog to Europe, pet passport etc? Also have you checked with the airline, their policy for transatlantic flights with dogs ? In Europe we don't fly with dogs in the plane with passengers. Its something that has always amazed me, seeing dogs in USA airports who travel on the planes.

As a former European airline employee, who has checked in many pets for international and European destinations, in cargo and in cabin, I am going to contradict you.

Specifics can different per airline what size pet is allowed in cabin and what size needs to be in cargo. But we surely allow small pets (cats & dogs) in the cabin. For my airline it was 8kg including bag/kennel, and some specific dimensions for the bag/kennel.

Hello - good questions.

First he's registered with the NTSB as a Psychiatric Service Dog for air & rail travel. Approval process that you have to go through. Each airline is different and it's important to check for transatlantic rules vs. domestic (Europe vs US). He does have to get permission from each airline to fly in the cabin no matter what. the dog has to be small enough to sit directly in front of us or size really small to sit in your lap *if* it's necessary. We use a standard airline approved travel bag as it's his "home" and he is totally chill in there for very long periods of time.

Transatlantic *if* it's a pet vs service you have to really do your research FYI. Some airlines will only allow travel in cargo.

For European Passport he has to go through vet checks & USDA approvals, microchipped (we will bring a microchip reader and have it available for airport staff to check him as needed). Each country in Europe can have its own requirements too: UK being the most stringent.

I note that you are having an extended trip in Europe

Are you renting a car ? if yes are you allowed to have a family pet in it ?

Are you staying in hotels ? If yes Please Check their Pet Policy

As for Flights .... that is a difficult one . Have you thought of the Reaction of Other Passengers

who may be seated near you when they see that have a small dog with you ?

If it is a service dog, the (mental) health of the owner goes above what other passengers might think.

Most countries allow service animals everywhere because they are not pets, they are trained to do a specific task. The owner has to get used to comments or looks from people who don't understand what a service animal is, or why the rules are different for them.
