<p><font face="Comic Sans MS">Any experiences with a hotel near WDW that permits larger dogs?  My retriever mix is 60 pounds and I know some hotels have size restrictions. We'll board her during the day at WDW kennels. I've seen some of the pet-friendly websites but would like some feedback from experienced guests.

By the way - we don't want to stay over near Universal ...we're planning on two days exclusively at Epcot.

thanks! </font></p>

Have you considered Tropical Palms?
They have one and two bedroom cottages available. Pets are allowed. It is in Old Town in Kissimmee and is within 4 miles of the Maingate entrance to WDW.

See this web site for possibilities http://tropicalpalmsrv.com/

most of the ones I have stayed out - do definitely have a weight limit

you can board your pet at Epcot the whole time - it would $11 instead of $6. if you are staying at a WDW resort it would $9 a night.

You would need to walk her at least twice daily - the cm at the Epcot kennel will walk her once for an extra $2.50 per day.

she will definitely need all her shots.

Otherwise - I am think your only option is the Universal hotels - loews hotels. if you want to kept your pet with you.

there are several kennels in the area - but the ones I looked at closed at 5 or 6 pm - that is kind of silly (my opinion) in a town where the parks close much later.

so Spicey is staying at either Epcot or FW kennel.

<p><font face="Comic Sans MS">Thanks, but we're not campers. And the hotel description specifically says "no pets."</font></p>

Tropical Palms has recreational vehicle sites, camping sites and sites for pop-ups.
But, they also have one and two-bedroom vacation cottages, which is not camping. Of course, it is not a motel room but it is not camping.

Also, they DO allow pets. We have taken our dogs many times there. Maybe the cottages have different rules.

Try this www.petswelcome.com . Also, the Universal hotels (Loews chain) ,Country Inn and Suites and Amerisuites in Calypso Cay allow pets. They might have weight restriction ,but, I did see some pretty big dogs at the Amerisuites.

Hope this helps!!!

Apparently pets are allowed at the campgrounds but not in the cottages. This is from the description of the cottages: Check In Time:4:00:00 PM
Check Out Time: 11:00:00 AM

Minimum Check In Age is 21 Years Old

Guests aged 12 Years Old and under at the time of check in are considered children.

Pets Are Not allowed.

The rates displayed Do Not include any applicable service fees, charges for optional incidentals (such as mini bar snacks, pay-per-view movies, or events, telephone charges) .

For late arrival arrangements, please contact our Reservation Department at (800)647-2567

Try the Celebration Resort. This is NOT the Celebration Hotel in Celebration City. It's off I-192 across the road from Windsor or Wyndam Palms. It's about 5 miles from the Disney Maingate entrance.

They advertise pet friendliness. Their rates look pretty steep when going directly to the resort website. You might want to check Hotel Kingdom or HotelMart USA. We got a VERY good rate through the Kingdom.

It's a nice, quiet place. The staff was very friendly. A call there will provide you with all the details.

Good luck!!!

Actually, unless they have changed the rules in the past 30 days, the Epcot kennel only requires that you take your pet for a walk once during the day, not twice. We have left our dogs there a few times in the past few months.

However, I would like to caution you - we have had two incidents there where the dogs were not properly cared for with the first incident being not too serious and the second being much more important in the realm of animal care. WDW and I are talking now about resolution but it is taking far too long to resolve - (this incident happened over Labor Day weekend so they have had more than enough time to resolve it).

I don't know that we will leave our dogs there again. I care too much about them.

I would suggest, that although, incidents can happen anywhere- you might want to check on your pet at least 3 times during the day, even if you are only actually walking him/her once. WDW is aware, per their Executive Office, that there are problems with the kennel at Epcot and they say they are working to resolve them. We'll see.

Matty's mom - please tell me what happen - I use the kennels at Epcot and FW alot - I like FW better - but when I stay in an Epcot resort I generally use the Epcot kennels.

the only problem I ever had was with old lady that kept letting in her boss's dog in the cat room.

My cat does not like any dog bigger than him - this dog was a very large breed dog - so my cat was a nervous wreck - I closed the door to the dog room twice - I talked to her about bringing in that dog to the cat room - and I finally had to talk to the supervisor - she promised that would not happen again and so far it has not....

this silly woman kept saying that cats don't like to be in kennels - trying to blame me for the problems - but hey he has been going to WDW since he was 3 months old (he is now 17 years old) and she was the only problem we ever had.

He has never liked dogs bigger than him - no matter how friendly or sweet - now I love dogs - but because of him I won't have one until I don't have him anymore...

so please tell me what your problem was - thanks

I do not mind telling you some of our recent experience at all.
I WILL preface it by saying that before this - WDW has always been diligent about resolving any issues that have come up. We have regularly stayed at WDW for the past 12 years and now that we are FL residents, we go more often for shorter trips.
On Labor Day weekend, we took our 3 dogs to the Epcot kennel - it was a 3 night stay. We signed them up for regular walks with an extra walk for our puppy.
We supplied the food for the puppy as she is on a very strict diet and did not want problems with her being given something that wasn't hers. We signed us up to walk them each evening at 7:30pm (the latest you could walk them on your own was 9pm, we have been told). First Problem was on Sat. night when we showed up to walk them. We came back from the walk & saw food in the crates. I asked about them having been fed at the requested feeding time of 5pm. They said they were late and didn't "get to all of the dogs in the kennel" . I asked how the dogs were supposed to wait for the entire night without relieving themselves after a meal -esp. a 7mth. old puppy. The girl shrugged and replied that she didn't know. I was a little irritated at this response but, in an effort to hold my tongue and stay calm, my DH and myself decided that we would just come back at 9pm - thinking the issue was a one-time thing...it was a nice night so we just hung out for a while. We walked the dogs again at 9pm.
On Sunday, we arrived to walk the dogs at 7:30pm and that is when everything got ugly for us...the dogs were all in crates that had not been cleaned for the entire day. My Sheltie who is 6 yrs. old would NEVER soil the crate unless she had absolutely no choice. My Spaniel is also very reliable. The puppy, of course, can only hold it for a few short hours. My poor Sheltie was covered in feces...all over her feet and tail. I could have cried. We took them out of the crates, asking for the manager and were told he was not there at the moment. Another dog (not ours) was running around the room and the staff member was trying to catch him/her - apparently, the dgo had pushed open the crate door which had not been fully secured. The room appeared (and not trying to be melodramatic here, believe me) out of control. I told the girl to clean out the crates while we were gone. We came back 45 min. later and the crates had not even been touched. I took the cleaner from the towel area, some towels and started cleaning their crates out.
They told me that they were unable to clean the dogs up -they said they did not have the staff to do it. I cleaned the dogs off myself at the sink with some towels that they gave me.
After the dogs were back in the crates, I went to the front desk and said that I wanted to see a manager. A young man in his 20's comes over to the desk and says he is the duty manager, I tell him what happened, and all he could say was "well, we are short-handed. The kennel is full to capacity and THESE THINGS HAPPEN." I didn't know what to say for a moment. Honestly, you would have thought this was a cut-rate kennel somewhere else, certainly not WDW.
On Monday AM, I went straight to Guest Relations. I told them the entire story, also told them that I expected a refund on the annual passes that we had just renewed on Friday evening when we arrived. The reason for that was because I honestly did not think that I wanted to spend as much time this year at WDW than in the past, not if these kinds of things, "just happened"...the Guest Relations rep was wonderful..she contacted the kennel, she refunded me the pass amounts (even though they are not refundable) without giving me a huge hassle. The kennel manager called me back within 10 min. He (someone different than I had spoken to the previous night) said that what had happened was unacceptable - (no joke, Sherlock) and that he would speak with the staff immediately. He asked when we would be there to pick the dogs up and I told him we would be there at 10am. He asked that we ask for him when we arrived and that "he would take care of it"...Well, at 10am, we did as he asked - he was contacted via phone and the girl came back to tell us " that he was called away elsewhere on property and could not speak with us" (????????) I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.
They returned all of the things that were left from the dogs bags and that is when things got worse...Chloe, the puppy, still had the same amount of food in the bag as was there when we checked her in. Nothing was removed from it...We took the dogs out of the kennel and left. On the way home, she started throwing up - yes, it could have been car sickness, lots of dogs get it and mine have on occasion too but I don't think it was. She was still sick that night and I took her to the vet on Tuesday. It resulted from the alternative food that she was given, he is fairly certain - can we prove it? No, but I can prove that we advised the kennel of the special diet and they ignored that information. What would have happened if there was medication to be given? Or something that they were allergic to?
I contacted the Executive Office via email and postal mail (with the same letter). About 4 weeks ago. the 3rd week of October - 7 weeks after this happened, I was contacted by the Ex. Office. rep. She agreed that it was unacceptable, but that it was a one-time thing and that she would refund our kennel cost. 2 weeks ago, I received a check for 1/2 the cost. I contacted her again - explained the situation. She said that the kennel records were not easy to read and in her words, "poorly kept" and asked that I forward a receipt to her showing the total. I did that. To date, there is no further response.
I am left wondering what else they could have done and I honestly cannot answer that. I don't know that WDW could have made this right. I don't care about the money. I care about my dogs. We don't have children and they are my "children" - a dog lover would understand that, I guess.
What disappoints me now is the total lack of empathy for what happened that weekend. The previous trip, there was one incident where the walk schedules were messed up and they missed a walk - a relatively minor incident , esp. compared to this.
Refunding me my kennel costs will not make it right. The dogs still suffered that weekend. If I were ever to leave them at WDW kennel again, I would be much more diligent. I would check the food left for them to ensure that they were being fed per our instructions and I would return at least 3 times per day to check on them and walk them myself. I would also, should an incident like this ever happen again, report it instantly to the ASPCA and any other controlling body who would listen.
WDW is great - but they are not infallible and they are not beyond the law.
Well, that 's my story - I hope no one is inclined to flame me for my reaction or tell me that I overreacted but if they do, I simply disagree.
That's why I would caution you to check on your dog or cat a few times per day and be diligent about their care. For many of us, without children and even some with children, we expect good care of our pets because they are part of the family. They have needs and feelings too - and when we pay someone to care for our pets, they have a responsibility and need to be held accountable when they do not meet that responsibility.
If WDW kennels are understaffed and take in more pets than they can handle, that is a staffing issue, NOT my issue and certainly not my responsibility.
Thanks for letting me vent!

Thank you so much for telling your story! You sure made up my mind that I will never under any circumstances take my dog on a WDW trip! The last thing I ever want to do is be worrying about my pet having a "bad" time, while I'm living it up in the Happiest Place On Earth! That is just horrible how they treated your pets! It just makes me want to yell!
We have a little teenage girl who cares for our dog when we go out of town. She visits our home 5 times a day. We also have a very trusted Kennel here not far from our home. Our dog likes it there, and our vet recommends it. I would much rather have my dog in our hometown and safe and treated well, than at WDW being treated poorly. It is worth any cost to me to have my pets relaxed and happy.
Gee Wiz, that makes me mad! Thank you for taking the time to share. It is for the good of all of our sweet pets!

You mentioned your dogs were in crates, does the Epcot kennel keep the dogs in crates or do they stay in dog runs? Personally I would never, and have never boarded my dogs at those types of kennels, I much prefer the ones with runs. We too are as paticular for how our pets are cared for as we are with how our children are cared for, and staying in a crate all day and night with the exception of the occasional walks is just not right, IMHO.

We have never had a problem with any of the kennels at various theme parks. The Epcot kennel, as well as the others, has always been clean, the personnel has been efficient and friendly, and the stay has been satisfactory.

We have used the kennels at MGM and MK as well as FW without any problems.

No doubt some of the posters who have had problems surely felt that they were not treated as they should have been. I can only say that we didn't have similar problems.

Some suggestions though might be helpful. We tend to go back to the kennels every two to three hours to check on the dogs and to walk them. When the kennels are full, and they are during times like Christmas, there is a lot of barking and general noise from the residents. Depending on the temperament of your dog, they may become agitated. That is to be expected. But, the staff can not do anything about that. It is just something that you can expect. We are diligent about our animals and don't expect the kennel staff to perform miracles.

We support the use of the WDW kennels and their staff, based upon our many experiences.

Thank you, Matty's Mom, for posting about your experience with the Epcot kennel. We always leave our cat and dog at home with a trusted petsitter, but I was considering the kennels if we decide to stay onsite. However, I would never leave my pets at these kennels after reading your post.

Our animals cannot speak to us and tell us what they have suffered. I could never trust a kennel that treated animals in the way you described, and the "These things happen" comment demonstrates in what little regard the kennel staff and management hold pets.

Oh I am so sorry that you stay was so horrible Matty's Mom - not to mention your animals.

I have always feed my animals - silly probably - but Spicey has stomach problems if I don't feed him then I won't know if he was eating or not - he only eats cans.

and I do check on him alot - he is my baby - he likes WDW kennels - but at his age (17 years old) - unless I am there - he sleeps. I generally go visit him and take him for walks - 3 to 5 times a day - I know silly - but I want to make sure he is alright.

On one trip when I flew and he couldn't take him. I boarded him at my vet's office - I explained to them that Spicey would not eat dry food and that he needed his cans - which I gave them - when I came back 5 days later - he was in bad shape - the vet remarked that yes he won't eat dry food - I took him home - he lose 2 lbs - they were trying to force him to eat dry food - well folks you can't do this with this animal he would rather starve himself than eat dry food.....(oh he only weight 8 lbs when I took him - so 6 lbs after)

so even with the vet you can have problems.

I have never boarded Spicey again with this vet....

so I complete understand your problems - I have always been afraid since my problems with the vet to have anyone feed him but me!!! silly, yes - but then I know what I paid for is being feed to my cat.

Oh this is off the subject - one time they had another cat in there and this animal was not eating the food that his person left with them - they have taken one of my cans to feed him - I had plenty (always get more than necessary) - so they were trying anything to get this cat to eat.

So even if you got some people who don't seem to care - there are others that do....I am so sorry that your stay (not to mention your poor animals) was not what you expected it to be.

they should have told you upfront that the place was packed and they would have trouble walking your dogs - so you would have known rather than just find out - that was very wrong.

there have been 6 cm's at Epcot kennels -when I have been there - 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening - were there only 2 when you visited?

at FW there is generally only 2 - one in the morning and another in the evening.

Not to belabor the point, but we lost a puppy after her stay at a WDW kennel. She was so stressed by the tiny crates and chaotic conditions that she became very ill and did not survive. While I most assuredly do not blame Disney for her passing, I would urge others to consider leaving pets with a trusted friend, in a familiar enviornment, or at least a kennel with dog runs rather than those horrible crates.

We also underestimated the huge amount of time that is required to care for your own pet while they are under Disney's care. So much of our time was either spent in transit to and from the kennels (this was when they did not walk the dogs at all), as well as the constant 'clock watching' to make sure we fulfilled our care requirements. It was not the best way for us, or for our puppy, to spend time at Disney.
