Dog ate corn cob

We're talking about the actual cob right? Not the corn?

Just trying to understand for my own purposes as I've given my dog corn kernels before and want to know if it's hazardous for him. I'd google but I'm sure the Interwebz would tell me my dog is going to up and die any second now (and lordy knows I don't need that today ).

Yes, the cob. I am not sure about just corn. We are over 24hrs out and he is fine so far. Normal poops, but I'm not really seeing much corn debris. But I might not if he chewed it up like I think he did. Here is hoping. This is pretty much what the vet said to do, wait and see. I really did not know they were so bad for dogs or I would have been more careful. My other dog has gnawed on corn cobs quite a bit. He has never eaten a cob though.

I am always so thankful when I read these stories that none of my dogs have been trash pickers, really, except my current dog who likes to pull "gross stuff" out of trash cans more than food items. I bought all trash cans with lids but there's one trash can he figured out how to get into, now I keep it backwards so he can't get at it.

I can see why you're worried - a corgi is a lot smaller than a lab, with smaller innards, lol. Passing even a small corn cob might be quite painful. Chances are though, that if it was relatively small, and he sort of chewed it, and then stomach acid broke it down further, that it will eventually pass and hopefully cause no further problems. Keep an eye on him, as others have said, and if he starts to seem like he's in distress, check his belly and if it's swollen or tender, likely in a few days, then it might be time to take him in.

With our golden it was days, maybe longer before he finally got threw them up. We were on vacation when he ate them, and not until awhile after we got home did he get sick.

Wow! And to think, those stayed in his upper GI system all that time. It must've been uncomfortable.

That's the thing - they can get stuck along the way. (Hopefully not, in this case.)

I have heard of them hanging around for a long time. Even a month. I'm already a worrier. Some days I hate the internet. Although I know they are very bad for you, there are lots of things that are really bad for dogs and we didn't know it and did for decades. I imagine it is like the things we worry about with kids that we didn't used to like see-saws and monkey bars. Some risk but sometimes overstated. All of my life my grandparents and parents gave dogs any leftover bones except poultry. No dog ever got sick. Now I am obsessed with never giving a cooked bone, but there were a couple of times where my dogs got them and I worried for a week. Ugh. Sometimes a little information is a bad thing. There is nothing I can do but watch now.

Well, luckily it's mostly digestable. Something like a sock or a rock would be even more worrisome. Chances are when it passes it will be pretty small. You might not even see it.
