Does your state have a booster seat law?

ours does.

would you let a kid ride in your car without one? their parents don't use one in their car either, the child is still in the range of needing the booster seat according to the law.

My state does have a law. I have rarely transported a child without the booster seat. The one time I can remember, the child was still young enough, but too big for a booster. I kept my kids in one until they were close to 8. DD only got out of hers because DS's carseat took up too much room.

In Texas the law is "kids in Texas who are under 8 years old who are not yet 4'9" tall will be required by law to ride in a booster seat or other approved car seat". I think that people often disregard the law.

and it has nothing to do with the law. My rule is you must fit properly in a seatbelt or you are in a booster. My 9yr old is still in a Husky. The law here is 8 I believe, but many kids aren't in them after 6. I just tell the kid or the parent that they must sit in a booster in my car (I have an extra). It has never been a problem. (I use the excuse that we have been hit 3x with kids in the car.. which we have.)

Now if there was an emergency of course I would if they were boarderline. I would put the biggest kid out of it (even if it were mine) if it were a short trip. We had car trouble once and my DD was 4 at the time. We rode home (in a strangers car..) without one. I felt terrible but I called everyone I knew and couldn't find a ride.

Great story.. a teenager that lived near where I broke down checked my car and discovered what was wrong with it. (It was smoking, and apparently a belt had snapped.) He said I'd never get it home. I made a bunch of phone calls but couldn't reach anyone. He installed my DS's roundabout in his car, but there was no way we were taking out the Husky. He drove us all home.

Not sure if we have a law here or not. My DS8 is on the shorter side . If he isn't in a booster the seat belt hits him in the neck and he can't see out window of my Expedition. I know I can get the device that makes the seat belt fit him correctly but then he still can't see out . Looks like he will be in it for awhile longer.

We have a law and I do obey it, but I personally think it is a bit over the top and wouldn't have kept my kids in car seats through the 3rd grade without it.

And I certainly don't feel it necessary to go over and above the law to keep them in carseats until they reach 4'9", at least for my girls who take after their father's side of the family and probably won't hit 4'9" until well into middle school if not early high school.

I know what you mean about the 4'9 thing. Middle dd is 12 1/2, and in 7th grade. She is nowhere NEAR 4'9 (she is 4'4"). The seatbelt in the back row of the minivan fits her fine...the middle row, not so much. So into the back she goes. I let her out of her booster once she started middle school. Before that, she was getting teased mercilessly about being in one so in 5th grade, we put her in a backless booster so neighborhood kids couldn't see it through the window of the van.
