Does your school district close for cold temperatures?

Our school closed once a few years ago when we had several bitterly cold days. As others have said, it is for the safety of the walkers and the kids waiting at the bus stops. I hope they have school tomorrow! I have the day off and was looking forward to a quiet day alone!:)

I think the "magic" number is -30. Remy has been to school with it being -23 and colder even..they don't go out for recess though if it is colder than -19. That's without windchill BTW. Same with snow...it has to be ALOT before they get a snow day..black ice closes the town though. We get an alloted number of snow days to use and if we go over only then will they extend school..normally though they end up with days they didn't use and the school has "free days" where the kids get to use the snow days towards the end of the year.

Yes, our school has closed a couple of times for extremely cold, like 40 below 0 windchills. :cold:

LOL if we get a 1/4 inch of snow our schools are shut - no way you want south louisiana people driving in ice and snow- we can handle large amounts of water but make sure it is thawed out...

My kids have never had their schools shut for "cold temps" with the exception of an ice storm we had 10 years ago- but I do recall having school closed for me at least twice because of cold temps but no snow...

We have hurricane days built into our schedule for the actual storms and for other heavy rain- no one expects bad cold weather here so there really isn't much planned for it

In my 19 years at my school I can remember this happening ONCE. It was Dec. 21, 1989. The AIR temp. was -20. The reason I remember was most schools used their brains and announced the closing the day before (when it was about -9) and passed out paychecks. MY district announced at night--and I had to drive there 1/2 hour in that weather to pick up my check--we were leaving Christmas day for a vacation and I needed that $ and the office was not going to reopen until Dec. 27. I was so mad they didn't do it the sensible way like everyone else. As far as I know it has not been that cold since--at least not on a school day.

Ok, I am sorry a head of time but I am :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: . They are closing schools because it is 5° :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: . I remember ONCE having our schools closed and that was because it was -65°, seriously. Heck, growing up the rule at our house was we didn't get a ride to school until it was -10° and we had an 8 block walk to school. Sorry, it wouldn't even be a consideration to close schools for cold around here until it got REALLY cold.

I just checked the temp, it isn't very cold today, the "wind chill" is 14°, DH and DS14 weren't even wearing winter coats today (I was but a lot of people don't).

I remember as a kid growing up in Minnesota, that if it was above 0, we had recess. I can't imagine -19 and letting the kids out.

In Georgia, however, the busses are not made to handle the cold. If it is too cold, they will have to start late...once the busses warm up. It's just not cost effective to use tank heaters down here. It doesn't happen too often, not at all this year.

2 years ago school was called for a 'cold day', but it was bitterly, bitterly cold, and the diesel fuel in the busses was turning to jelly, and the busses would not run.

We're a semi-rural/suburban area, and VERY few kids can walk to school.

We had 2 and 1/2 snow days last week. It went down to between 28 and 30 degrees. Not negative, just below freezing with rain. Everyone went kind of crazy taking picture of actual ice on our roofs and such. There were quite a few large car pile ups so I guess it's a good thing we shut down since we obviously don't know how to handle that kind of weather.

We closed for cold weather a few years ago and the parents were not happy with the supt. It's supposed to get down to -20 with the wind chill today. So far no schools in my area have announced delays or closings. I had a student show up yesterday with no coat on  :cold:
