DD, 15, told me today that she wished her HS offered Latin, because she would like to study it. They offer French, German, Spanish, and Russian, but no Latin. My HS 25 years ago did have 2 years of Latin, but I had no interest in it. Is Latin going away?

DS, 14, is taking Latin at our HS. They are having a Toga party soon...

Unfortunately, fewer and fewer HS's are offering Latin. I took 3 years when I was in HS (graduated in 1999) and my younger brother took 3 and just graduated in June. The future of our Latin program is in jeopardy though, because the Latin teacher has just retired, so I'm not sure what they are doing this year. I really enjoyed Latin, especially all of the connections to present life and mythology.

DD's school offers it. She took one year and hated it. She switched to French this year.

I'd love to take Spanish, myself....

Nope. I just graduated last year and my school only had French and Spanish. I took French for three years and that was it.

Our HS offers 4 years of Latin. There are alot of students that take the classes and do very well in it. The kids place very high in the Latin competitions they attend.

I took 4 years of Latin and really enjoyed the classes.

Yes, DS took it for 1 yr. in middle school and 3 yrs. in HS. He would have taken it senior yr. also, but he couldn't deal with the teacher for 1 more year. Let's just say she was in the middle of the "Big M"! He caught her one day with her head out the window trying to cool off!

Ok, as I live in Gibsonia too, are you talking private school?

I just graduated high school in June, and they still offered Latin. I was one of the kids who suffered through it for 4 years. My sister is a sophomore and in her 2nd year of Latin. If anything, the Latin program at my old school is growing, rather than going away. They also offered French, Spanish, and German.

I am not sure if our high school offers Latin, but I believe that our online "virtual high school" does. Those courses count for high school credit here in FL.

It is a shame that schools are not offering Latin as widely anymore. While it is a "dead language," it helps SO much with understanding English grammar and sentence structure, SAT-type vocab, etc. I had 2 years of Latin, and it was very valuable IMHO!

Our HS offers it as well as the middle school (8th grade). In 7th grade your are introduced to 4 languages. Spanish, French, German and Latin. Those 4 classes are then offered from 8th grade all the way through. My son took 4 years of latin and loved it. He didn't take it his senior year because he couldn't fit it into his schedule.

They don't offer Latin at our High School.
I have read that in some areas of the Country, Latin is coming back. I have also read that studies have shown that students who take Latin tend to score higher on the SAT.

I live in Cranberry Twp. They offer Latin at Seneca Valley, and my nephew in the North Hills school district has it also. Are you in Pine-Richland?

My son took 2 years in middle school and is taking it now in his freshman year. The Latin Club is extremely active and it's a hard class to get into. My husband was hesitant at first but it was a great choice for him. He and his friend built a chariot for chariot races!

I took 4 years of Latin in HS. I have a special seal from the state of Georgia on my diploma. I have no idea what most of it means anymore. lol I so wish that I had taken Spanish. Maggie

At my kids's high school in Maryland, they offer French, Spanish and German. However, my nephew in CT is taking Latin.

Yes our high school has latin, it is so popular they added another Latin teacher this year!

Our local HS offers Latin, but it doesn't count as your two years of foreign language--in other words, you still have to take Spanish, French, German, or Japanese to graduate. :confused3
