I was just listening to the News while I sit here and they are talking about the fatal shootings that took place in a High School in Minnesota.
They said that the teen first shot "an un-armed Security Guard who was standing by a Metal Detector".

It got me thinking to myself ........ our High School doesn't have a Metal Detector and I have been in other High Schools and have never seen a Metal Detector. I am just wondering...... how common are these?
I am pretty sure that they do have Metal Detectors in the High Schools that are located in the city of Detroit.
Are they only present in large-city schools?
does your High School have one?

No, our high school doesn't have them. We do have cameras.

No metal detectors. Cameras at each entrance and people have to get "buzzed in" by the secretary during the school day. Hence the cameras. It's pretty low security though, easy to get in. Also cameras in the caf, to catch any fights that may happen in the lunch line. This is in one of 3 public high schools in the biggest city in the state.
In the next town over, my mom teaches at a school with no metal detectors. They do however have 40 or 50 something cameras all over the school. They had a real problem with bomb threats about 4 or 5 years ago, so they went high security. They have more cops at the school on a daily basis, and cameras than we do in my school. And that's in a lower crime neighborhood.

No metal detectors. They just finally got a door where you need to buzz to get in. Took them long enough.

My school has (Middle school where I work) has buzz in doors, some cameras, some large mirror type things, and a security officer that comes in daily.

Wow, so far I am the only one that has voted yes. We got metal detectors my Sr. year of high school. I happened to graduate the year that they had the Columbine shooting and we also had a lot of school shooting and bomb threats. My school decided to play it safe and had them installed. The main problem was sometimes they would go off for no reason and they couldn't figure out why. We also had a school shooting threat during our graduation and had to be escorted into the gym by a lot of cops. Everyone that came had to go through the metal detectors and you could tell that a lot of people were really nervous the whole night. It ruined graduation for quite a few people, but nothing happened.

We were actually just talking about this today in school. We have cameras and two cops, but no metal detectors. We have ID cards but we aren't required to present them when we enter the building. The doors are ALWAYS unlocked, anybody could get in at any time. My school is HUGE and there are over 2200 kids. Two cops and some cameras really don't do much of anything, especially since the cops are never there when you need them and the teachers who are supposed to be watching the video from the cameras are usually grading papers as opposed to paying attention. There are other schools near by, smaller than mine, where students are at least required to swipe their ID cards before entering the school and any visitors must present photo ID. They also keep their doors locked. I don't live in a large city, but it's a very big town and considering the size of my school (referring to both the number of kids and the size of the building itself), I think we should at least keep all doors besides the main entrances locked.

As of last year (when I graduated) - no metal detectors or security cameras. We had one on-duty police officer ("Campus Resource Officer") on campus at all times, as well as several un-armed security guards. It claimed to be a closed campus but it was pretty much a joke, there were open gates all over the school and it was quite easy to slip in and out. The only time they checked IDs/forced visitors to "sign in" on a regular basis was when people left campus the first 15 minutes of lunchtime, and that was only if you went through the main gate.

No cameras, no metal detectors, and no security guards except to patrol the campus at night. Any problems are handled by the headmaster and honor council.

I graduated a 3 years ago from a relatively small (about 600 people) Catholic school. It didn't (and still doesn't) have metal detectors, cameras, or a security guard.

It looks like at this point (at least among DISers) only about 8% of the High Schools have Metal Detectors.
