And what are the requirements?

This is mostly a venting moment. DD8 brought home her report card yesterday. For the 4thQ (of 3rd grade) she had her lowest grade of the year (88%) but her highest overall average (94%).

According to the policies at our school, you have to have all A's or you make the "B" Honor Roll. So forget about all her other grades (98,97,96,94 and 92), she got an award for B honor roll.

On top of that, because she made 1 B this year, she didn't qualify for the Honor Roll for the Year either. Her year average was above 90% but they don't count that, just that you make the A honor roll 4 times.

DD was crushed. She had worked so hard this last quarter and brought up all her other grades by a couple of points and then she gets squat!

I sent the teacher and the principal an email asking for clarification but all I got back was a regurgitation that A honor roll is only for straight A's. I think this policy is a disincentive to work harder since if you get one B the first quarter, why worry? You can't ever get back to the A honor roll for the year?

Vent over for now.

What are the requirements at your school? I want to go and fight the school/school board on this and want some examples to take with me.

Thanks

Sorry that you DD worked so hard and feels she did not get anything for it. My Kids Elementary Schooll did not have HOnor roll. They have it for Middle and High schooll. They also have A and B Honor Roll but it is based on your Overall Average so while that may seem fair. It can also be a problem as a Child who recieves 90s in most subject and a 70 in another could end up on the B honor roll ... But a child who recieves 80s in ALL subjects could end up getting nothing.
My DD was a little upset when she did not make the A Honor roll for 1 quarter also ( she missed it by .5 of a point) But that is the way it goes. She now misses out on the Principle award for being on the A honor roll. I used this as a learning experience for her to strive to do better so she does not have to worry about a Half a point.
I would Praise your daughter for her efforts and let her know that what really matters is that she did her best!

My elementary school did not and still does not have an honor roll. And the middle school I went to got rid of the honor roll.

no honor roll, they dont even get a,b,c grades.....

We had honor roll, all B's and 1 C and High honor Roll, all A's, and 1 B in middle and high school though....and they stlil do here

I am sorry your daughter was disappointed, but A honor roll is just that.....all A's. That is why they have an A/B honor roll....in case you got a B or two.

Disincentive to work harder? The goal is to bring your grade up. That is the reward....personal satisfaction! Sure, you can never get that all A honor roll, but at least you are not the kid who is worrying about whether he will make an F or a D to even pass the grade level. Sorry, but there just seems to be too much emphasis on being perfect and being recognized as such.

Our school has an A honor roll and a BUG (Bringing Up Grades) honor roll. To qualify for A you have to have all A's. To qualify for BUG you have to bring up one grade by 3 points and not go down in any other grade.

No honor roll for elementary school and no "real" grades....they get 1, 2, 3, & 4's

Middle school does honors and merits. honors is for average above 90. Merit is for averages above 85. I think the high school is the same.

Our elementary school doesn't have As, Bs etc. until grade 3. No published honor roll, but if you get all As and Bs for a semester they mail you a nice certificate.
At DD's jr. high honor roll is 3.5, recognition roll is 3.0-3.49. DD was on honor roll for quarters 1 and 3, but "only" got a 3.48 2nd quarter. The kids who made honor roll all 3 quarters got a certificate, but kids who made recognition roll got nothing.
Grades are so high at the local HS that high honors are 3.7 and up, honor roll is 3.3 to 3.69, and 3.0 to 3.3 is recognition roll. You need a 3.7 to be in honor society!

Nope, no honor roll for elem. school. Middle school has honor roll. The requirement is 3.0 GPA or better for the quarter.
