Does your dog sleep all day?

My 1 year old Bichon literally sleeps all day. He wakes around 6:30-7:00 in the a.m. Sometimes he falls asleep again (sometimes not) and goes out for a walk at 9. After that he's asleep until about 3. He goes to bed at 11 but naps at times between 3 and 11.

Is that normal?

Merry Christmas Eve! Happy Hannukah!

We have a yellow lab that is around 6 1/2 years old, and he pretty much sleeps all day. He is usually awake and full of energy in the evenings though. We just recently had to put him on medication to control seizures, and it makes him even more sleepy, but the vet said that the sleepiness should subside once he gets adjusted to the meds, in about 3 weeks. But he does like to sleep, even when he was not on the meds. He's kinda lazy anyway. For a one-year old dog to sleep as much as you described, it seems a bit much, but maybe that is normal for him. Maybe you could ask your vet about it.

If I let them, my two dogs would nap all day. They sleep from about 8pm to about 8am almost every night. They do not wake up to go out. We put them out, but once they come back in, they nap. They have really little active time. They love to nap and sleep in. They really love when I need a nap and then seem me get out the napping blanket. They get all excited and hop on the bed and most times are snoring before I get comfy. I got me some lazy dogs.

Does he have anything better to do? Dogs do tend to sleep more than 20 hrs/day, but if they have daycare or an active outdoors life they get a lot more done than the typical suburban pet.

That's funny. They get excited when they see you get out the napping blanket. That's pretty cute.

Our dogs sleep all the time. Of course one is an 18 yo terrier mix so I think she deserves to sleep all day! :)

My cockapoo does the same thing and my beagle was the same way also....it's a dogs life...haha

Dogs appear to be sleeping during the day but they are actually "on alert" more than at night. If its cold, rainy or snowing, Jude doesn't get up until late morning. I have to get him up to make my bed.;) He sleeps at the bottom of it on a throw, so I just straighten the bed around him. He is that lazy.

My two dogs sleep off and on all day. If the kids are wild and moving around, they are too. If the house is quiet, they are too. It is a dog's life.

Oh, yeah, my golden actually gets a bit cranky if she thinks it's naptime and we're active around the house. She'll give a big huff and stomp downstairs to a bed she has in the basement where we won't disturb her beauty sleep. (She stays in that room when we're gone.) She gets very happy if one of us goes up to our bedroom because that means she can nap upstairs on her dog bed. :rotfl:

They sleep a lot. I think that's why people say "It's a dog's life," as in, wouldn't it be nice to lie around all day.

My 2 dogs (2 year old shiba and 11 year old collie mutt) wake around 7 for food and potty. Then sleep until noon. Then doze. Then play together. Then eat dinner at 5. Then play, walk, and then doze all evening until time for bed at 11 when they sleep. Oh, and shiba wakes around 4 to potty again. ;)

My beagle has always been pretty active, and he's 14 y.o. now.

Right now, he's staring me down while I'm at the computer. He wants me to find a treat for him.

He sleeps a lot when I'm away from the house. When I'm home, he's sits and watches me do whatever.

He travels with me in the car on errands, he's got a pretty active life.

He goes to bed on his own round 9 p.m.

I think he's the nosy type. He likes to be involved in goings on round the house.

herc.

What do dogs do on their day off? They can't lie around, that's their JOB!!

My dogs are gonna be sad tomorrow. We will wake earlier than normal and then be busy all day. They won't be able to sleep in or nap like they are used to. Poor things.

Yes, he does and I'm so jealous!

I think I might go home and get out the napping blanket just for a quick snooze. Won't my dogs be happy!

I wish!

My dogs get into all kinds of mischief during the day. They'll only nap if I nap.

He used to sleep quite a bit of the day. If I had to guess, I'd guess he slept 20 out of 24 hours.

Maybe all our dogs have mono? :confused3 That could acount for the sleeping 20 out of 24 hours a day.
