I'm debating about buying a new headboard for my son or a captains bed. The latter is obviously so much bigger and provides more storage in the room, but I'm concerned about support since you do not use a box spring, he's only 6, so he's not heavy, but I wonder just the same.

Thoughts?

Thanks:D

Is that the same as a mates bed with the drawers underneath?? If so, my five year old has one...its great. Love the extra strorage, but its rather cumbersome to move if you need to.

yes, i believe they are the same. I would hate to move this thing myself, that's for sure.

My dd 10 has a Captain's bed. 4 drawers and a cubby hole with doors that swing out. Heavy as can be but nice.

Hi Karen :wave2:

that's exactly the one I'm talking about.....does your DD sleep well with just the mattress?

My 3 yr old has one. (a little hard to get into but he's a climber anyway) He loves it. We turned the older DS's in to a loft bed and so Eric wanted bunks too we convinced him that he was in the top bunk and his toys were in the bottem. Hey what ever works. He loves it plenty of room to wiggle around as he sleeps. I had firm (maybe xtra firm mattress) that we use and there's plenty of support I've spent nights in it when he's restless (He was a very poor sleeper sometimes still is he's a power nap type). I'm sure you son will love it.

Lori, she sleeps good on it. No problems at all. She likes it a lot. Takes up a lot of space in her room but we got it from a friend for free. Can't beat that price. It's beautiful. If I can, I will post a pic later today or tomorrow.

Both my boys have captains bed, we need the storage space.. i have slept on them when was the kids are sick and need MOM and found it very comfortable. WE do have a very firm mattress on the bed.

My 3 boys all has captains beds right up until they were in their teens and no problems at all.::yes::

My dh just built my 8 yr old dd one, and we put it in her room on Monday. Her box spring was nothing but a bunch of little wooden slats and a thin board anyway, so it is not really any different sleeping on her new bed. She loves it.

My DS (currently 6) has had one for about two years and it is working out fine. His room is small so there wasn't adequate room for a dresser and bed, so this was the perfect combination. The mattress was a cheap-o one from the local BJs. I didn't want to invest in an expensive one at his age (vomiting, possible accidents, etc), but he is perfectly comfortable, as have I been and also my Dad has slept on it and liked it....................P

My soon to be 11 year old has a captain's bed. The thing is solid!!! No problems at all.

Travis had the Captain's bed with 8 drawers for storage. He had plenty of support and plenty of storage.

We finally got rid of it when his grandmother gave him a waterbed when he was a sophomore in high school. I loved that Captain's bed. We got it when he was two :)

We have two beds similar to what you describe. One in DS6's room is a trundle with a pull out matress underneath. The other, for DS8, has one big drawer. Both have the matress sitting on a "bed board" (as the furniture manufacturer called it) in lieu of a box spring. Both beds are very comfortable and I see no problem with our kids sleeping on them. The extra bed and extra storage really comes in handy.
