Does your AP card also act as room key?

Hi All, When we received our APs we got the card like the old key to the world cards. Will these also work to open our room or do we need to stop at the front desk for the room card? thanks so much!!

Can confirm that my AP card does not work on our door at the Riviera just now.

Not sure if this is the case at all the resorts but at the Polynesian, they don't give out resort cards anymore. You need to use a magicband or your phone to access your room.

Wonder what they do for people who have neither?

I thought so. So @islandsnoopy is incorrect when they say the Poly doesn't gif out cards anymore. Right?
Correct. I haven’t read any posts from people who were denied key cards to access their resort rooms at Poly or any other Disney resort. I have read many posts from people who were planning to do exactly that, and no one came back to say they were denied a key card.

You can still get a key card. Just have to ask for it at the front desk.
I did ask for a card but the front desk saw that we had magicbands so wouldn't give us a card. Thought it was odd when he said they don't give out resort cards. Perhaps if I'd pressed the issue, he would've given us a card.

Yes, that’s interesting. Maybe to keep people from sharing key cards with extra people not registered to the room.

I was told it is to keep the amount of "media" each guest has as small as possible. All of your MB's and Key cards stay on your MDE and eventually if you have too many they slow the process of reading it down. When you tap the door it has to search through all of your media and then link to your current resort reservation, the less media to search the better

So if you have a MB then a key card is redundant, and the CM's will try and avoid it if at all possible. If you have no MB and don't want to use your phone the front desk should have no problem issuing a key card.

As someone who had to have my original MDE account closed and open a new one due to too many trips (too much media) I accepted this explanation as it makes sense to me!

Thanks for the info!

We were at AKL last week and asked for a card for someone who did not have a MB. The person mentioned the phone option. When I stated that was not a good option and the guest wanted a card, he gave us one. You should be able to get the card if you want it.
