I may be taking my 6 year old daughter to WDW by plane. I am worried that she will get sick from the plane, should I just play it safe and give her a childerns chewable dramamine? I take them for myself, b/c I'm sure I would get sick.
What should I do?

what about the motion sickness bands you can buy at the drugstore as well? Those work really well. Look sort of like a sweat/wrist band with a little white dot that you wear on in the inside of your wrist. It really helped me when we went to Hawaii. Im not really prone to motion sickness but I thought the long plane ride might get to me after a while and it did. The bracelets helped! :)

Good luck and have a wonderful time!

Does she usually get car sick? If she handle's cars and trains without a problem, she may be okay on a plane.

If she's okay during take-off, she'll probably be fine for most of the flight, except for the landing.

Whether you give her dramamine or not, try to have her do activites that won't make her use her eyes too much. What makes people motion sick are disturbances in their balance sensors (not the correct medical term, but it fits here). Reading, coloring, drawing, and other activites involving a lot of looking around, which uses these same sensors, so on the plane, try not to over-stimulate them. Maybe have her listen to music on headphones, read her a story, or just have her play with her favorite stuffed animal or doll.

Ginger helps-can she tolerate the crystalized ginger? They also have crystalized ginger covered in chocolate.

My dd2 has horrible motion sickness in cars. We always travel with zip loc bags, a towel, and a change of clothes for her in the car (learned our lesson from having to unpack the trunk on the side of the road)

I also have terrible motion sickness in cars. I must either be driving or riding on the passenger side. (I can't ride on the driver's side in the back seat...bad things will happen ::yes:: )

However, I have never had any problems flying, and I was hoping the same would be true for dd. We flew to WDW last year and both girls had a blast. It was their first flight. No motion sickness problems at all. The movements of a plane are so different than those of a car, and you can get up and walk around. Just never let on that you fear your dd may get sick and build up the flight as an adventure. Worst case, they have those baggies handy and you can get her Dramamine for the return trip. I'd be willing to bet she'll do fine without it, though.

Good luck!

Laurie :)
PS - I was really shocked that dd2 loved the teacups! They made me :faint:

Perhaps the fast acting variety is something to consider for your child because she wouldn't have to take it unless she started not feeling well.

For yourself, have you tried the prescription transderm-scop patch? I don't like taking dramamine as it makes me sleepy/groggy and doesn't wear off until hours after the flight is over. I like the patch because it doesn't make me drowsy and is extremely effective. And since it can be kept on safely for three days, I sometimes leave it on and make a trip to space mountain :)

Have a nice trip!

My DD7 gets a little motion sickness on planes, but only when taking off and landing. She is fine in the car and on trains. We give her dramamine about a half hour before we take off and she's fine.
But, I wouldn't give it to her unless I knew for sure she needed it. If she gets car-sick then I would say yes, give it to her. But if she doesn't she may be fine. Even when my DD got sick the first time, she didn't throw-up or anything, she just complained that her stomack was hurting. I talked to our pediatrician and she recommended the dramamine.
Even if you get motion sickness, it doesn't mean she will. I have an aunt that gets terribly sick on planes, but she has four kids and none of them have a problem.

My DS 11 gets violently ill in the car, it can be a 25 minute trip, and he will be sick everywhere. I do find it is much worse if he tries to read or play his Gameboy, but it can hit him even if he isn't doing anything. I give him Dramamine the night before, so if he does get tired it won't matter. It lasts 24 hours according to the package, and it does help him. I did give him Dramamine last year on the flight to WDW, we had no problem with motion sickness, but both kids complained about their ears hurting, so we used sudafed on the trip home. Much better.
