We have a bottle of Jim Beam bourbon whiskey on the wine/liqour rack. It is unopened (everything is unopened) but is probably 10-15 years old.

We were going to try a bourbon glaze for grilled salmon and I had to ask myself that question. I know that it is not considered aging because it is not in the seasoning barrel. Also the amount added to a glaze is very little.

But is it safe to give to a guest? (if we ever had one)

NO...you should not drink that! You should mail it to me and I will dispose of it for you.

Yes, it's fine. I have a large bottle of Crown Royal that only one occasional guest from out of town ever drinks. It's about 8 years old now. He was here for the 4th of July and drank a glass of it then. He said it tasted great and it didn't make him sick, so I'm thinking it's fine.

See my tag - I had a bottle of gin in my freezer during Katrina. I'm sure you have heard the horror stories of all the refrigerators that were full of disgusting rot after no power and high temperatures for weeks and weeks.

I was lucky in that I had no food to rot - who knew that butter doesn't rot like meat. I threw out the butter, but kept the gin. I know that isn't years like yours but it was pretty intense.

The gin was fine and is long gone.
