Does Valium really work?

Last week I took my DD to the dentist. It was a horrible experience for her. Not because of what they did, but because of what happened to her at the dentist a few years ago. She's had regular cleanings since then, but this visit she needs 2 fillings. :(

I had planned on her getting laughing gas, but she was so anxious that she wouldn't even put the mask on. After an hour of bribing, begging, and coersion, nothing was accomplished.

We left the office with a prescription for 5mg valium to give to her before her appointment tomorrow. She's to take one tonight and 1 tomorrow before her appointment.

My question is....does valium really work to calm people down and relieve anxiety?

He gave me a prescription for 6 of them. She only needs 2. Do I get the other 4 for Black Friday? lol Just kidding! :)

I've only taken it one time when my mom passed away. It works! Or at least it did for me. I'm sure you and your daughter will notice a difference in how she feels and acts once she gets to the dentist. I bet she won't be as nervous/anxious at all after taking it. Good luck.

I have only taken it once, after my Lasik eye surgery. It worked but I didn't like what it did to me. I slept most of the time (which is what my doctor wanted me to do), when I did wake up I was so groggy that I ended up going back to bed.

Edited to add: I don't remember how many mgs. it was. It was 2 years ago. Also because I rarely take medication it usually works really well on me.

5mg should be good to relax her...I have taken 10mg and it sent me right to sleep! If she can just get the mask on, she will be in LA-LA land in no time!!

I confess, I get gas to get my teeth cleaned..I HATE The dentist!

My husband take valium before his dentist appts, and he swears by it. He really has a fear of dentists, and is able to go and get whatever work he needs done. He does feel groggy, he always has someone drive him to and from his appts, but he is never "out of it".

DH has had to take valium before going to the dentist. Not because he was nervous but because they would make him sit in the chair for 2-3 hours with his jaw wide open, he would end up in tears it hurt so bad. So they gave him a presciption for valium. One the night before and one before the appointment, it worked for him. But the silly thing is the dentist gave him a prescription for 30....with a refill. And he didn't need that much dental work.

I've only taken it once and it didn't work for me, but I was in a severe state of panic when I took it, that not much would've been able to sedate me.

My SO's SIL took valium when she was in labor with her ds. She was terrified of getting an epidural and she couldn't handle the pain. She said it worked within seconds after she took it. She said she was told she was cracking up the nurses asking why they had chickens running around loose in the delivery room.:teeth:

Good luck to your dd.:)

My mom would love his dentist!

My dd was given liquid valium before dental surgery. She is a high-anxiety, never stop moving kid. After she drank it, she sat down, put her head on my lap until they called her in. It was amazing.

Got my RN cap on again. Valium is a controlled substance and highly effective. We rarely give it to our patients at the mental hosp because it so "good" and very addictive if used long term. I personally took it once when I had some tests done on my back and I was knocked out for HOURS........I don't even remember the 2 hour drive home after the test! I wouldn't give her more than the 5mg!!!

They gave it to me when I broke my leg. It worked. I liked what they gave me before surgery much better.:teeth:

I had a low dose for LASIK and the adjustment a few months later...I could barely tell I'd had anything. Vicodin calms me better.

I had surgery for a bleeding ulcer nearly two years ago, and @ 1-2 hrs. prior to surgery they gave me Valium while I was waiting for them to prep me. I didn't know I'd be getting it, but I sure felt great when they did! I had a very calm, steady, couldn't-care-less-about-the-surgery kind of feeling.

Good luck to your DD. :)

Valium is an older drug.

Beta blockers (such as Propranolol) may be more effective; I'd personally recommend Dothiepin (Dosulepin), 25mg one hour before you go to sleep; it's a TCA anti-depressant with a sedative effect and can be very beneficial in the short run.

SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs and associated drugs would only be suibtable for long term use.

I cannot take Valium. As soon as it hits my bloodstream I get depressed and go into a crying jag. It ends as soon as the Valium wears off. They have to give me something else.

Highly recommend valium. I would never go to the doctor or fly in an airplane without it or xanax.

They gave me Valium (and Vicodin) when my back went out last year. I'm still suppose to take one now and then if I ever feel my back is tensed up. For me, it works.:D

I had some out patient surgery several years ago. The nurse started the IV and said she would be putting liquid valium into the line to calm me down before surgery. She then left me in the prep room with my DH. In no time I was slurring my words and feeling very calm. About 30 minutes later the nurse came in with the valium for my IV  . So I guess for me, just the THOUGHT of the valium works wonders!
