We're considering buying into DVC through resale and was wondering if the use year matters? Also, if we were to buy at one resort because it's selling for less, is there a disadvantage because we really want to go stay at another resort most of the time??
Thanks for your help!

Depending on the resort you are talking about, it is usually adviseable to buy where you want to stay. This is especially important if you are thinking about staying at one of the smaller DVC resorts that don't have as many units. If you are thinking of BCV or VWL, it would be VERY important to have that 11 month booking window.

I have never considered Use Year to be all that important. It is really only important if you think you will have to cancel ressies last minute on a regular basis. We have been members for 8 years, take numerous DVC trips, and we have never had to cancel last minute, so I think it is a moot point.

Most of our points have a December UY... I would not recomend this UY for the most part... The reason... a silly one... an example... our Dec 2004 points really are 2005 points since only one month (dec) is in 2004, the rest of the UY is in 2005..... Kinda of confusing. BUT We have taken to borrowing points, so we do use the 2004 points IN 2004. LOL

If you always travel in a certain month, you would want to find a UY that is a month or two before when you travel most. That way if you have to cancel, you have the majoirty of your UY left, and/or you have time to bank points.

Hope that helps! Have fun finding that perfect resale contract!

I personally believe use year can be very important but it depends on your situation. If you might need to cancel the last few months before your trip, it becomes very important.

Thanks for all the helpful info.

Sorry I couldn't do the search so I didn't know there was a recent posting.

I also have found that our use year is important, and we take several trips per year. We have Feb and March use years, and found that very inconvenient for a December trip, especially if we have to cancel or cut the trip down in size. We bought an August contract specifically for our Christmas trips, and it's always in a borrowing mode, due to the high points needed at that time. Still, if I cancel, I can always use the points at spring break or in the summer. Using the Feb or March contracts means that the points couldn't be used if I had to cancel.
