Does US have/Does Canada have...?

Yes, it is the law
My hubby likes to motorcycle in Montana, and take off his helmet (I know-dumb-but just for a few miles he says!)
Are helmets mandatory in other States?

In mine yes, but not all.

I don't think Canada has white Castle, but we do have White Spot

Are Seatbelts required everywhere, or is it on a state by state basis?

Seatbelts are a state by state thing. Here in NH everyone 17 years old ( I think it's 17) & under must wear seatbelts. Adults only have the option of not wearing them

Are there many Americans living in Canada on a permanent basis?
We get CBC here, but what other network/cable TV do you commonly receive there?

Jean

I know a few Americans living here.
We get lots of American channels. ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, KTLA, PBS, and then ones like Spike, TLC, W, and on and on. I can get about 70 channels through my cable company (Shaw) and I bet 40-50 of them are US! So, from watching tv, I can see things that you have that we don't (Albertsons, Kroegers, etc..)
I think most things are very similar from Canada to the US. It is interesting to hear about things like employment, schooling, laws, etc... and see the differences.

I'd like to chime in here.

We have Safeway here, mainly in the western states. In the southern part of New Jersey, near Philadelphia, we have a "family-owned" supermarket chain called Genuardi's that was bought out by Safeway but still retains the Genuardi's name.

Happy 4th of July to our American friends!!

Hope you have a great day of celebrating your country!

Favourite family vacations spots for us:

Banff and Jasper for skiing, hiking etc..
BC lakes-gets very hot there.
Calgary Zoo is huge and teriffic, CalawayPark in Calgary is lots of fun too.

West Edmonton Mall-the biggest mall in the world! It is apparently still bigger then the Mall of America. In it there is a waterpark with bungee jumping and a wave pool, an amusemtent park with a bunch of rides and carnival games, 3 mini-golf courses, an underwater submarine, a huge boat, over 800 stores, restaurants. The anchor stores there are Old Navy, Winners, Sears, The Bay, Zellers. There is a regulation size ice skating rink where the Edmonton Oilers occasionally practice. There use to be a dolphin show there with 4 dolphins, but now it is a sea lion show-very cute. It is a huge huge mall. Very cool.
We stay mostly in Alberta, but there are tons of beautiful parks and lakes in Canada, and lots to do!

That Mall is amazing!!! I doubt I got to see half of it in the 2 days I was there! I really loved the wing that looked like a street, with street lamps, restaurants, cafes etc. - very cool!

My grandmum would bring Smarties from England for me when she would go visit. Mmmm, those were good! And, the colors were SO much prettier than M&Ms!

Smarties are prettier, but M & Ms taste better! We had Smarties here before we ever had M & Ms, and I liked them then .... but once I had M & Ms I liked them better than Smarties.

Canada have Boars Head Cold Cuts??

YUMMY!!

And Nathans Hot Dogs?
Or Sabretts Hot Dogs?

I have not heard of any of those types of meats. Our big ones here are Schneiders, and Maple Leaf.
As for the vote.....why should I vote for you?
Who is your favorite hockey team...... :rotfl:

Thank you!

Are fireworks legal in Canada? Here it goes state by state, & often, then on to city by city. Fireworks are legal in New Hampshire.
do you have a holiday where fireworks are considered an integral part of the festivities?
am assuming fireworks are popular on New Year's Eve?

jean

Happy belated Canada Day!

I briefly heard about Cascar...similar to US Nascar racing. Is this almost the same type of stock car racing? Speaking of racing...another type...What happened to Paul Tracy? I haven't heard anything about him this year?

No fireworks on News Years Eve - do darn cold!! They are legal in Canada - at least in Ontario but you have to be 18 to buy them.

We usually only have major fireworks for Canada Day - July1.

Now I have to think of a does any where in the USA have sub sauce at Subway? When we were in Cape Canaveral they looked at us so funny when we asked for sub sauce on our sub and then said oh, you must be Canadian!

Didn't Paul Tracy just win in Cleveland?

How about plum sauce for dipping chicken fingers in the US? They always seem to only have BBQ sauce or honey.

I will have to put a few things in perspective ! I'am french Canadian from the province of Quebec , and while alot of the things written about canada applies , some of them are very different:

Montréal attrac a lot of american /hollywood movie making: tha aviator , the day after tomorrow , thewhole nine yards. Vancouver gets a lot of TV series ( X files etc) and Toronto gets a mix of the two.

Two weeks paid vacation is the law, maternity leave is a yaer , paid by unenployement insurance. Father has by law two weeks when the familly is having a baby.

English canada does not watch a lot of canadian tv shows or go see canadian movies. English tv station carry mostly american shows. In quebec many local shows have more than 3million viwers ( on a population of 7 millions, that is almost half the population of the province ) This is unheard for english canadian shows. Same for films , where year after yaer the higst grossing canadian film is a film from Quebec.

Compare to the USA , we have raw milk cheese. ( made with milk that has not been pasteurised)

Poutine is very good , and you have places where you will have 10 different kinds ( with peas , or chicken , or spaghetti sauce etc)

In New Hampshire, Vermont & Maine it is also popular to have a 'cottage', we call them 'camps'. They are usually humble, but homey & not centrally heated, but with woodstoves or fireplaces.
The last few years, there has been, in the southern tiers, a trend developing tearing down the old family camps & building HUGE 'summer' trophy homes-
Lovely spots such as Colebrook, Pittsburg, the Notches, in NH are quite near Canada!
:goodvibes

Jean

In MN it's very popular to go "up north" (yeah, I know, in the US, how much further north can you get??) But anyway, there are more lakes in central to northern MN and lots of people have summer or weekend homes and everyone refers to them as going to the "cabin" The trend here is also toward buying a modest lakeshore home, tearing it down and building a huge gorgeous all windows facing the lake luxury home.

I've never heard of plum sauce in the US. McDonald's here has BBQ, honey, honey mustard, sweet and sour, and hot mustard sauces though. I always get BBQ sauce for my son and honey for my daughter, so I'm not sure what the other fast food restaurants might have.

No, we don't have A & W's

Does Canada have Olive Garden Italian restaurants?

Jim
We have A & W's in upstate NY!

We lived in Calgary for a year and I agree they have a wonderful Zoo and we went often to The Historical Park, I can't remember its name, but it had older rides and a train. When we lived there in the early 90's our daughter was potty training and we could get pull up diapers for training in the US but not in Canada. We made a trip to Great Falls and bought $100 worth while we lived there. Being Texans our other problem was the lack of Tex Mex food. We found none in Calgary and had to resort to friends sending us the spices and chilis so we could make our own.
