Does US have/Does Canada have...?

Yes to Kraft mac and cheese!

Is Canada seeing a rise in immigrants? Here in the US we have signs to accomodate those that speak Spanish. Do you have a need for that as well?

ETA- The signs aren't prevalant per se. Instructions on most products and business phone recordings offer Spanish and English.

P.S.- Does Canada have Corporate phone recordings? Like when you call to a company or Dr. office do you have to follow instructions according to a pre-recorded message? It drives this one person nuts! I like to speak to people!!

Where you have English and Spanish, we have English and French. Is Spanish Immersion as common there as French Immersion is here?

And we do have those stupid recordings!

No Harveys that I know of, not in the midwest to be sure! What in the world is on those fries?

Sandy- how was Freedom Fest? Do you live close enough to the border with Detroit to even know about it?

Poutine is cheese curds and gravy on the fries.

Never heard about Freedom Fest. LOL - I'm not even sure where Detroit is! I live in eastern Ontario - about 3 hours north of Syracuse.

YES and our family wouldn't be able to survive without it (generic doesn't compare)!!! We also have Velveeta mac and cheese too, but I've never been a fan.

In towns across America we have little mart type stores. A quick store to run in and pick up soda, candy bars, cigarettes, chips. Some stock more household items than others, like pain medication, bread, that type thing, newspapers and magazines, etc... Most have their own food selection available. Some make Pizza, subs, steak sandwiches, that type thing (though they're not really a deli). Turkey Hill is one we have in PA and they've marketed their own ice cream (and it's really good). I think they all sell gas too and they're prices are cheaper than the privately owned stores, so most of those have gone out of business. At least they have for the most part in my state. Some names in Pa include, Turkey Hill, Sheetz, Uni Mart, Mini Mart, Wa Wa, Martin's. They are ALL franchise type stores. Nothing like the mom and pop stores (though we have those too). Does Canada have these type of little marts?

I seen recently that Sheetz is now doing a drive thru. You drive up, order your soda, and what not without even getting out of your car.

Yes, we have those mini-marts too. Like 7-11, Macs, Red Rooster, Tops, Quick Stop. They have slushes, convenience foods, gas, subs etc.. too.

Big Turks are chocolate bars that have a kinda red ju-jube center with chocolate on top. I asked because my friend sends a case to her sister in the US every Christmas because she can't get them where she lives!
You call them candy bars, we call them chocolate bars.
You call it soda, we call it pop.
Am I right??

Oh yes we have those. Corner stores we call them around here. They're usually part of a gas station.

Does the US have Lacrosse?

We are a very diverse nation - I think the projected stats for the very near future are one in five will be a visible minority. We don't have problems with immigrants not wanting to learn English or French.

Legal immigrants seem willing in general to work on communication. I don't think we have a problem with legal immigrants that only know their native tounge, but realistically they have to be able to communicate with other Americans to work, eat, play etc...

Illegals ont he other hand, could start a debate of epic proportions.

Does the US have Harvey's fast food?

I've never seen a Harvey's here, but we do have Hardees (not sure that's spelled right though).

That proutine looks awesome!!!

We do eat french fries with gravy or french fries with cheddar cheese sauce. Kinda like you'd eat on nachos.

That pic made me hungry!

Soccer to us is the sport with the black and white round ball-very popular
Football is the sport with the brown oval pigskin!
Our football has different rules then yours apparently. I don't know what the differences are though.
Of course-hockey is #1 here!

Hersheys is a chocolate bar, most of the rest are candy.

I call it pop because I am from Michigan. It varies based on region. In some places it is Soda, others it is Coke for everything, like even Sprite!

The only illegal immigrants we seem to get are Chinese people hiding out on boats and then people who come here legally and temporarily and then don't leave when their time is up or they are supposed to be deported.

I have heard of Lacrosse, is it like what we call Field Hockey here? Hit a ball with a stick, but in a field and not on ice.

I think there are pockets of the US that Spanish is becoming very much the mainstream. I think it's a growing presence elsewhere as well. I can't think of one product I have bought that doesn't have Spanish instructions on them. Nor can I recall one pre-recorded message that has not included a Spanish version.

We have the children's show, "Dora the Explorer" that teaches children Spanish. It's a very popular show. There's another show also about a brother and sister. I can't remember the name. Oh and "Dragon Tales". It doesn't teach Spanish, but I believe the culture depicted is Spanish.

Does the US have music styles by regions of the country? For example, here we have Quebec french music and music from the Eastern Coast (lots of fiddles).

We have Dora and Dragon Tales here. In fact, most of the tv shows you have there, we get. The channels I watch the most are CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and KTLA. Do you get any Canadian Channels down there?

Man, if only! We have a flood of them, and many are receiving aid from our government! Many get paid to work under the table here too, taking jobs away from Americans.

You're right to a point. The further north you go, the more you'll hear soda being called pop. Actually, I think I live in an area that calls it pop a lot, but I didn't grow up here, so it's soda to me.

No Big Turks here though. We do call them candy bars though. I live in the state of the Hershey bar. I know, on level with the chocolate of the world, it doesn't compare, but I'll take their chocolate any day of the week. We do have a company called Gardner's Chocolate and it compares very closely to German chocolate. My hubby's family is from Germany, so I can say for a fact that it's pretty darn close. They're always sending care packages to the states so I actually get German chocolate for free! :rotfl: I guess NOTHING compares to that!

BTW, we also have 7-11's. I'd forgotten all about that one.

Every few months or so, I go shopping in the US and I'll pick up things at the grocery store and I'm always surprised by the Spanish. It's like who is speaking Spanish around here? :confused3 There doesn't seem to be in spanish-speakers up in northern New York. Some Quakers though! We have pockets of Quaker communities in Canada as well.

Got Canadian stations in Detroit- PBS I think and an independent, but that was in the 80's. None here in Kansas City.

We do have lacrosse here. I played on the school team from 7th grade till 12th. I have a friend in Chicago, his 2 sons played for their school teams too, but now they both play in college. I'm not sure if we have any professional teams once out of college though.

Here in Ohio I can get CBC. :)

What's the average paid vacation leave in the US? I think here it's about 2 to 3 weeks for a fairly good job. I heard in some european countries they get months! I wish!

How long is your maternity/parental leave? Here it's a full paid year! And that can be split between either parent.
