I found 3 bottles waayyyy in the back of our liquor cabinet... They must be 10 years old!! :scared1: I found a recipe for cranberry mimosas I want to try but I have no idea if I should use these bottles...anyone know??

I have no idea so I suggest to just open them and find out. I was just thinking about mimosa's this morning, I only have them during the holiday season for some reason.

Unopened Champagne does not go bad. It will still POP when you open it even if you open it 50 years from now. It doesn't AGE like Wine does but it doesn't go bad.

Cranberry mimosas sound good!!! Not sure about champagne, but I've had wine that was about 40 years old. I guess as long as no air gets in, you're good to go. If it's gone bad, you'll know right away.

OK great!! This is the recipe I'm trying:

2 cups cranberry juice, chilled
2 cups orange juice
1 (750 ml.) bottles Champagne, chilled
slices fresh orange, for garnish (optional)

pour 1/3 cup cranberry juice into each glass. Top each serving with 1/3 cup orange juice and about 1/2 cup Champagne. Garnish with orange slices, if desired. Six servings.

Before wasting the cranberry and OJ I would plan on making this recipe by the glass verses a whole bottle recipe. I would just put a few tablespoons of OJ and cranberry in the glass, mix, then top with champagne and garnish.

They sound good. Thanks for the recipe!

This is not correct. Champagne can certainly go bad, and is likely to if not stored correctly or if it's from a bad vintage or vineyard, but I've even had Dom Perignon that went bad. Not all wine is meant to lay down for long periods of time. It won't make you sick, per se, but it will go to vinegar or just taste bad (and if stored upright, the corks can dry out and even lose the carbonation).

OP, best way to know is to open a bottle and taste it. You'll know quickly; if it tastes bad, it's probably turned.

That sounds really really good.

Yes, it will go bad. My Dad passed away this past March and when we cleaned out his home bar we found a bottle of champange. I brought it home to toast my Dad but when the cork came out there was no pop and it was flat. I think it was from the late 1980's.

It IS wine, it ages like wine, it will go bad like wine if, as a PP mentioned, it's stored improperly (or if the corking was flawed).

It can be fine for 50 years, it can go bad in one. Try it and see!

I have had champagne that had gone bad. It was cheap champagne, though, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Vintage champagnes (has to be at least 39 years old to be sold) will age nicely if stored correctly. Non-vintage champagnes don't age very well. Open it and taste it , but have a spare bottle on hand just in case it is bad. Enjoy!

So is Wine in the pantry/fridge the only thing DISer's will try past an expiration date??

It's so funny to read how much people throw out over a date on a package, but alcohol... just try it. Then come back and report if you wound up sick.

I will help you out, send it to me and I will let you know...cause I'm sweet like that:)

Yes, wine can go bad, as others have mentioned, if it is not store properly.
Too hot, bad cork, not turned if stored on it's side, all can cause the wine to go bad.

We never have wine in our house long enough for it to go bad. Well, we did inherit 4 bottles of wine from the MIL, the my wife keeps around for sentimental reasons, and I just checked them, and the 1974 Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon seems to be weeping from the cork, so I just turned it upright, but I suspect it has turned nasty.

:rotfl2: Now that's funny! Got me wondering if the person who accidentally made lasagna with old noodles last week ate it or tossed it.:confused3
