Does this sound crazy?

Guess I read one too many Amish fiction books, because now I really, really have the urge to start making some patchwork quilts again.. LOL

In the past I have "cheated" and used my sewing machine, but I'm not even sure it works anymore, so I might have to do them by hand (like my grandma did).. I have two quilts I made back in 2000 that I keep up here at the lake and they're great when the weather is cold.. I don't really need anymore, but I was thinking maybe I could make a couple to put away for my DGD when she's older..

If it's "not" a crazy idea, what sizes would you suggest I make for her? Queen? Full? Twin? One of each? And what would be a good way to store them for probably a good 10 years or more?

I still have a couple of handmade quilts at my DD's that my grandma made for me when I was 16 years old (I'll be 60 soon), I use them all the time (put them through the washer and dryer), and they've still held up after all these years..:lovestruc

I took a quilting class a few years ago. I enjoyed the process but really wish I could find somewhere local where I could learn quilting by hand. Around here all of the classes are machine quilting.

Machine quilting just didn't suit my need for a portable hobby (I have young kids with lots of sports). So, I've taken up knitting.

Personally, I really like some of the smaller quilts (wallhangings, doll quilts, etc...). But my other thought would be to make something for yourself or a family member. If you know who you want to be the recipient of the quilt, it will help guide you on size, pattern, and colors. For instance, you'd make a completely different quilt for your DD than you would for your granddaughter...

Happy Quilting!

I love making quilt tops, but I use a sewing machine and wouldn't even attempt to do the quilting myself. I used to make my son a quilt each birthday, but I've slacked off the last few years. When we buy a new house, I plan to get my sewing machine out of storage & start up again!

I think it's sounds like a great idea!

Not crazy at all I would go with Queen size. That is what DH's aunt made for us & i have used them on Full size beds, also it works fine. She made us both a "machine" sewed on & hand stitiched one.

See this is what I was thinking.. If DGD doesn't use it until she's married, by then there could be no such thing as a "full" bed - only "queens" or kings" - KWIM?

How about storage for all those years? One of those vacuum bags inside a tote maybe?

I like those "quilts" where you take two sheets of fleece, cut strips along all four sides, and tie them together.

This is about as crafty as I get... but I don't think it counts. :confused3

I'd make it a full, that way it will work on a twin, and still cover her (and maybe HER DH and babies) in a full or queen bed one day!

Forgot to mention I won't need any supplies except batting.. I have several totes filled with material, threads, quilting needles, etc., up in DD's attic - so the cost would be minimal.. :)

I don't think it's crazy at all! My fiance's grandmother gave us a quilt she made for Christmas this year and I LOVE it! Quilts are soo pretty and so warm and comfy! She even sewed a little patch on the back that says "Quilted with love by Grandma Blackston" .. :goodvibes So I definitely say go for it!

Oh - thanks for reminding me of the "tag".. I have some of those (special ordered when I used to make clothes for DGD) that say "Made With Love By Grandma (insert her pet name for me here)".. That would be perfect! :thumbsup2

I'd make a queen.
Store in one of those space bags or a hope chest.
It'll be fresh as a daisy when she is ready for it.
What a wonderful gift.

ps. I have made 4 quilts. All hand pieced and all hand quilted.
And MANY wall hangings.

I will have to make one for my new grandbaby coming in Feb :)

I think it's a great idea. I still have the quilt my Grandmother made for me(with Bonnet girls and boys) when I was 10(I'm 40 now). Honestly, we didn't treat it very well. I used it on my bed every night so it was put in the washer and dryer all the time. Then when I moved out, I put it in a hope chest and that's where it stayed for about 15+ years. I just recently pulled it out of the chest and gave it to my Mom so that she and Grandma can do some repairs on it. Some of the materials used were not the best quality. So some of the girls and boys needed to be replaced. It is a wonderful heirloom though. Your DGD will love it. When I get it back, I plan to put it on display, as a wall hanging.
