We, DH, DDs (17, 11), DS (16) and I are going to be in Orlando for 12 full days from March 31-April 12, staying off site with a rental car. First time for all of us except a trip for me when I was 10.

Unfortunately the crowd calendar is showing 9s at WDW for most of our trip. I am thinking that if we purchase a 4 day pass we will do rope drop and should the park get too crowded we can skip out and go to US/IOA as I am considering getting a 14 day 2 park pass ($120). DH says we have to go to US!! If need be then we can upgrade to a 5 or 7 day and/or WP+ WDW pass and do whatever we missed because we have the extra days.

I have to make a decision and buy the tickets because we are just under 3 weeks from leaving!! Time really got away from me!!! :scared1:

Go ahead and buy your 4-day WDW pass. If you buy a 7 day now and only go for 4 days you're out the money but you can buy the 4 day now and add days or options once you get there. I don't know about Universal park tickets, but you can upgrade WDW tix (add days; add WP; add park hopper; etc) within 14 days of first use.

We always buy tickets that are shorter than we need (they are usually more $ off at the reseller site) and add days as we need them. Extra days are cheap to add on (a couple of dollars a ticket) and can be quickly done at the guest services at any park.

You can even add on if you have no days left as long as you are within the first 14 days of use.

I would buy the minimum number of days I was going to use and then add on as required.

It's a good idea to upgrade after you see how much you will be going to the parks. 4 days isn't much, WDW is very big. For a first time visit to see much you would need 2 days for MK, 2 days Epcot, 1 day DHS & 1 day AK. That would be 6 days for WDW. The WDW water parks are fabulous! If the weather is nice I would def. add them. If you have a 6 day ticket, you would get 6 days in the parks, and 6 visits to water parks and Disney Quest with the park +water parks and more ticket. As you will be there 12 days, this would be a great option.
Since you will be staying off site at a busy time, I would def. get to the parks at rope drop. When crowds build, WDW will shut down a park first to off site visitors, then if necessary to on site guests. I have no idea how often this happens, as we don't go during peak seasons.

Love Universal! We usually spend 3 days there if we go to Universal during a trip. 1 day Studios, 1 day IOA, and 1 day going back revisiting our favs.

Sounds like you have a great trip planned.

Thanks for the input!!

After looking at the latest deals from Undercover Tourist through Mousesavers I'm going to get the 6 day base because it's only $1 more than the 3 day with the deal that's on now!!

Once we see what the weather is like down there we'll make the decision on the WP + upgrade.
