At least one of the local traffic people here says the word "ave" instead of "Avenue" C'mon...is it REALLY that hard to say 'avenue' during your traffic report?? Grrr...maybe it's just the copy editor in me, but that's REALLY irritating, KWIM?
While on a road trip (I think it was Minneapolis) I noticed people referring to (just as an example) 1-75 "E" instead of I-75 "East". I thought that was peculiar.
If it's a recent development, I can see how it would be weird, and annoying.
That being said, in Boston, one of the jokes is, is that you can tell a tourist or a new college student by whether they say "Massachusetts Avenue" (tourist or new student) or "Mass Ave" (local).
Come to think of it, most of the big 'Avenues' in Boston are 'Aves'. Mass Ave, Brookline Ave, Comm Ave (Commonwealth Ave).
Doesn't bother me I used to live on University Ave. That is how we wrote our address too so that is how we said it all the time. Others too on the street.
