Does this annoy anyone else??

It's tempting to string some random letters together, just to see if anyone is really paying attention. Of course, there are so many acronyms on this board, my attempt at being random would probably actually mean something.

This could possible be true. I'm sure more than one person would attempt it too. I'm horrible at it, so it wouldn't be me.

When I can't figure out what the poster is saying because of the abbreviations, I just make up my own meaning to their post. Some of them are quite fun, especially the relationship abbreviations. :rotfl2:

It's not just you. I hate it. I don't mind the abbreviations if you've used the full name at least once in the post, but I hate it when people just start right out by abbreviating. So if you're reviewing a restaurant and say "Crystal Palace is our favorite" and after that you call it CP, I'm fine with that. But please don't start out with "CP is our favorite."

(I don't object to WDW, though - I figure on here everyone must know that one, and Disney even uses it, so it doesn't irritate me like the others do.)

I also hate all the abbreviations used for family members, like DW, DS, DF, DD, DM, etc. Especially since some of those are used to refer to more than one person. DF= Dear fiance or Dear Father, DS= Dear Son or Dear Sister. I don't want to have to try to figure out who you are talking about. Why can't people just say Wife or Son or whatever they actually mean?! And I really hate the whole Dson/Dwife/Dhusband/Dniece thing. (Fortunately I almost never see it outside of these boards, but there are lots of people on here who do it.) The D serves no purpose whatsoever; please just leave it out. I'm sure they are very dear to you but I really hate that stupid D. Dson isn't a word. It just looks like you made a mistake when typing about your vacuum. Please just use real words and don't make up new ones!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I do not understand the family member abbreviations whatsoever, nor do I see the point of them. I always thought that the "D" stood for Disney. :rotfl:

Anyway, to the original poster, I agree completely. I myself do not mind a few abbreviations, but some people go overboard. Just type out your words!

I am starting to get SO annoyed by disser's that only speak in abbreviations, lol. Good grief I feel this irrational desire to be the disboard police and beat them with my keyboard :scared1: That all having been said with humor it really is annoying when I'm reading a post and have to sit there and figure out what the poster is trying to say. For example my favorite restaurants are WC, FF and CG. The best example is on the thread "Which ride would you rather have down?" I rarely post there because it takes too much time to what the poster is referring to :rotfl: So am I crazy and overreacting or do others feel this way.

Same... I don't understand half the posts at times. Every abbreviation I think needs to have a link to the "key" for what it means.

You are assuming that the same people are on both lists. That's a mistake.

Another way to look at it is that schools are doing a great job of preparing kids on the college track for college. This is evident by high GPAs and SATs. However, in a current economic climate, more kids who would not traditionally be on the college track are enrolling in college. This results in a greater number of kids in remedial classes.

Actual, the California State University system says these ARE the same students. That's what's concerning them....how students who based on their GPA's and SAT scores are better prepared than the past, are actually less prepared.

Years ago - when I first registered here - one of the first threads I read was a poor woman being raked over the coals and taken to task because she didn't put a "D" in front of the names of her stepchildren.. You can't even begin to imagine the accusations and insults that were hurled at her - for pages and pages and pages..:sad2:

Needless to say, I figured I better "straighten up" and follow this invisible rule right from my very first post.. So - I do use the "D" - except when I'm talking about my son-in-law - in which case I type "Dson-in-law" - since DSIL can also mean sister-in-law (and probably a dozen other things that I'm not aware of - LOL..)

Other than the "D"'s, I try to stick with just the LOL, MIL, and FIL - and not use much of the other lingo.. Half of it I can't figure out anyhow..:goodvibes

I wish I hadn't clicked on that link, luvsmickeymouse. :scared1: I really really hoped you were just joking about "sposies". That's just nauseating!

I remember a thread like that, or at least I remember people bringing it up on someone's threads fairly often when she talked about her step kids. For the poster I remember, people were carrying on because she did use the "D" when referring to her biological child, just not her step children. You know how people on the Dis are about step kids - I think they thought the lack of the "D" showed she treated the children unequally and it was like blood in the water, everyone had to show up to rip her apart.

I like PPs suggestion for using the full word and then later using the abbreviation. You can do that for so many things too.

:rotfl2: Except you JUST did your pet peeve with "PPs" in the first sentence without writing it out first. If I'm new I wouldn't know that meant "Previous Poster" (which is what I'm assuming it means because it's one of those it took me a while to figure out, so I could be wrong).

Anyway, the "Dfamily member" doesn't bother me because it's used on every single message board I'm on.

Abbreviations don't bother me though because they are used in real life too. We have them at my work, as a matter of fact, I think we have had them at every place I worked. I mean I don't type out Universal Product Code every time I use it. We even say UPC. You just have to figure out the context of the language...just like a CD (Certificate of Deposit) in banking terms is not the same as CD (Computer Disk) in computer terms

CD actually stands for "Compact Disk"pirate:

:lmao: I stand corrected but I'm not the ultimate computer person in the family. I did have to explain to my husband how older people were thinking a mouse was a foot pedal (i.e. if they sew, I could see how they might think that not knowing much about computers. He never got the funny about that until I explained it.)

I'm back from the no such thing as a hard drive anyway! You used the tape recorder to store your programs ;) I think I need to find the Old fogey thread...

you are talking about the old tandy computers that used a modified version of a cassette tape to store, and load, the data!

of course, I woun't even start to talk about the old WYSE stuff!
:cool2:

I'm fine with it as long as the abbreviations aren't misspelled.
