I am starting to get SO annoyed by disser's that only speak in abbreviations, lol. Good grief I feel this irrational desire to be the disboard police and beat them with my keyboard :scared1: That all having been said with humor it really is annoying when I'm reading a post and have to sit there and figure out what the poster is trying to say. For example my favorite restaurants are WC, FF and CG. The best example is on the thread "Which ride would you rather have down?" I rarely post there because it takes too much time to what the poster is referring to :rotfl: So am I crazy and overreacting or do others feel this way.

I have felt that way at time. On this board (and others), I have seen this conversation happen from time to time:

A: Hi everyone! I just found this board, and am looking for help trying to plan my first Disney vacation ever! Can anyone help me?

B: Sure. You will want to stay at either POR, WL, or possibly BLT, depending on your budget. You will definitely want to hit SM, BTR, PoTC, and HM at MK, probably during EMH. Unless you are going to be there during MNSSHP, F&W or MW. At AK, you want to see KS early in the day, and KRR when it is hot, and EE always has a line. . . .

A: :confused3

There have been posts to help first time visitors that required me to keep the "What do all these abbrevations mean?" page open in order to translate.

It's spreading. My daughter is in college and Professors in 2 classes have had to warn students that such abbreviations and texting shorthand are not acceptable in college papers!:scared1:

Of course I'm still trying to figure out how Freshman who entered college in the fall of 2009 had the highest GPA and SAT scores on record, and also had the highest number of students who needed to take remedial math and english classes. Our schools are failing us.

Nope, those don't bother me. BUT...don't get my started on things like...ressies, breakie, appy....don't even like it when the Polynesian is shortened to Poly. Drives me nuts. But, in the big picture, it's just not worth getting in a twist over.

It's not just you. I hate it. I don't mind the abbreviations if you've used the full name at least once in the post, but I hate it when people just start right out by abbreviating. So if you're reviewing a restaurant and say "Crystal Palace is our favorite" and after that you call it CP, I'm fine with that. But please don't start out with "CP is our favorite."

(I don't object to WDW, though - I figure on here everyone must know that one, and Disney even uses it, so it doesn't irritate me like the others do.)

I also hate all the abbreviations used for family members, like DW, DS, DF, DD, DM, etc. Especially since some of those are used to refer to more than one person. DF= Dear fiance or Dear Father, DS= Dear Son or Dear Sister. I don't want to have to try to figure out who you are talking about. Why can't people just say Wife or Son or whatever they actually mean?! And I really hate the whole Dson/Dwife/Dhusband/Dniece thing. (Fortunately I almost never see it outside of these boards, but there are lots of people on here who do it.) The D serves no purpose whatsoever; please just leave it out. I'm sure they are very dear to you but I really hate that stupid D. Dson isn't a word. It just looks like you made a mistake when typing about your vacuum. Please just use real words and don't make up new ones!

You are assuming that the same people are on both lists. That's a mistake.

Another way to look at it is that schools are doing a great job of preparing kids on the college track for college. This is evident by high GPAs and SATs. However, in a current economic climate, more kids who would not traditionally be on the college track are enrolling in college. This results in a greater number of kids in remedial classes.

I'm even MORE confused because since I'm not a Disney person I have NO IDEA what they're talking about! :confused3

The abbreviations that bug me are dh, ds and dd... really? How far is ds from the word son? Daughter I get but ds and son?? really?

:lmao: Wow, Scurvy, I saw this AFTER I posted my vent!! :rotfl2: So glad I'm not the only one!

I like PPs suggestion for using the full word and then later using the abbreviation. You can do that for so many things too.

My son (H) was blah blah blah at Tower of Terror (ToT) when blah blah. H thought ToT was awesome.

Tada. Now we all know what is being said.

I am not a fan of initials, and absolutely hate the DearPerson - they aren't always so dear when I am writing about them, :rotfl:.

As a new poster, it can be pretty tough. Sometimes I need to keep a acronym sticky tabbed to go over. Otherwise, I can get lost.

The boards I visited as a teenager ALL hated abbreviations, shorthand, text writing.

And even in a text message, before qwerty keyboards were popular, using predictive texting took half the time. And predictive texts were not programed with all these abbreviations. So it seems like it would take longer to do it that way than just to write out the whole word.

Spelling isn't too bad. I like the fact that most browsers have automatic spell checker. Google Chrome and Opera have it. Sometimes I'll get a couple letters mixed up or miss one here and there. Sometimes I have that knack for knowing the spelling isn't right, but I don't remember what I'm missing.

Although it's funny when some one says they're a teacher, and writes a horrible written post with obvious spelling errors.

But because it's a normal internet thing, to leave out the D *means* something. For instance, when I write about my mother in law, I type MIL. Not DMIL, not ever. Part of that is because she most definitely is NOT dear to me. But also because I just don't do the "dear" thing. However, I will type DS and DH for son and hubby, because to leave out the D would indicate to those reading that I'm feeling negative about them. It causes a problem for the reader, because I'm leaving out something that is used nearly across the board on message boards.

Well, in a long story with many people, doing the translation sometimes requires notes when people are doing that with names. I'd rather just know the relationship, and that's quick and easy.

lol? Short for laugh out loud?;)

I caught that the OP aka Original Poster typed that, too. :upsidedow

Really? I never knew people felt that way. In my experience, it takes more than leaving the "D" off to make people think you aren't happy with someone. If most people on here feel that way then maybe that's why so many people insist on including it all the time. (Although, it isn't done on most of the boards I visit, so I don't think it's a universal internet thing.) I still hate it, though, so people can assume I don't like my family members if they want but I'll still keep calling them my son and husband, without the D. I'm evil that way. :lmao:

It's tempting to string some random letters together, just to see if anyone is really paying attention. Of course, there are so many acronyms on this board, my attempt at being random would probably actually mean something.

WOW!! The "D" means Dear?.....:confused3

I always thought that it meant "Dumb":scared1:

just thought there were a lot of grumpy people on this board!!!:lmao:

The word that drives me nuts is prolly (instead of probably). Who says prolly? To me it sounds like the way you would say it if you were trying to talk with your mouth full.

I thought the "D" meant Disney. I thought everyone was saying my Disney Husband or my Disney Daughter. Oh my.
