Does the IPhone calendar alert function work while in airplane mode?

We're travelling to Africa, and will have our phones in airplane mode the whole trip. But I still want the phone to work as an iPod. Will the alerts still "alert" me while in this mode?

They should. You can test it now. Set a calendar event for a few minutes from now, put your phone in airplane mode and see if the alert works.

Yes it does, it worked for me in Europe in airplane mode......
