Does the assigned ticket holder have to be present to upgrade?

I have a 2 day ticket in my MDE account that is assigned to my daughter. I will be at WDW a few days before she arrives. Can I go to guest relations and add a day before she gets there, or does she have to be present to upgrade the ticket? I know I can call to do it, but we won't decide for sure if we want to add the day until closer to the time.
