DS will be going on his first flight in May. since I have never traveled on a plane with a child, I was wondering if he'll need some form of I.D.?

No. they don't need ID. They must be with you, and sometimes they have to know their own name. (The TSA guy will look at the ticket and ask the kid their name.)

I have recently (post-911) flown with my own children. Their tickets said "M Carlson". They didn't even have their full names. TSA never questioned it in Denver or in Miami. They barely even looked at my kids.

Nope, don't need an ID. Usually the TSA person will ask the child their name. Last time the TSA guy looked at my DD12 and just said, yep, she belongs to you! (She's a much younger and prettier version of me!)

Enjoy!

the only thing we have ever needed was a photo copy of their birthccertificate. We always bring it along, have flown 6 times with the kiddos but have only been asked to show it 1 time. HTH

I've never had to show anything for my DD, and she has flown 8 roundtrips.

Flying from Maine to Orlando we had to show the childrens birth certs at the ticket counter. This was the only time we had to show them. Think it will depend on the airport you fly from whether or not you have to show any type of proof they are your kids.

We've travelled quite a few times over the past 6 years with the kids and never been asked to show ID. I usually carry their birth certificates with me.

We have only had to show any type of ID when we have flown internationally with our kids and then it is only a passport. Domestically, we have never been asked for anything. However, I am guessing if you are flying with an older lap child you MIGHT be asked for a birth certificate to prove that the child is under 2. We have never done the lap child thing so I can't be CERTAIN of that but I have seen others need to birth certificates in the airport before.

Have a fun trip.

I called SWA to verify that we wouldn't need anything for our 9 and 10 yr old. You could also check the TSA website or call your airport.

I had to show a birth certificate for my DD who because she was a lap baby (you don't have to buy a seat under 2 years old). The only reason they made me even show it was because my father did the ticket ordering, and put her wrong birth year in!

No. We once got given a hard time in Orlando because our son is Korean. But he was old enough to look at the TSA person and say "that's my Mom, I'm adopted" I'm assuming you don't have that issue. And even if he wasn't old enough, I don't think our issue would have been a big deal - just call a more intellegent agent over to explain the concept of multiracial families to the first.

ID is not required for travelers under 18 for domestic travel.

There are two instances in which an airline will ask for a birth certificate. The most likely is to verify a non ticketed child (flying on a parents lap) is eligible to do so, they must be under 2 years old. The other is to verify a very young baby is old enough to fly, they must be at least 14 days old.

I have been flying with my dds several times a year since they were toddlers and they have never been asked for ID by the airline or the TSA. About 1/2 the time the TSA agent will ask them to say their name to compare to the boarding pass when entering the security line.

I have traveled with my dd's as well as my my neices a few times. Even though my neices have a different last name and are of a different nationality we have never had an issue. I have never been asked for ID for any of the kids or to explain who I was and why they were traveling with me.

Even when I was the solo adult with 4 fairly young kiddos :)
