In the hospital when Ed was getting morphine he was very hoarse... When he was off it and getting oxycontin it was normal... The insurance has refused oxycontin and he's back on Morphine sulphate..He started it wednesday and immediately his voice got hoarse...I'm I seeing a connection where there is none? Does morphine do this?

DW Lauri has been on Morphine Sulphate for about 1 1/2 to 2 yrs now and I don't notice any hoarseness. Although I guess it could do different things to different people? :confused3 I'll ask her later if she's noticed any difference on it.

Morphine is known to cause respiratory depression, meaning it slows the rate of breathing and the depth of inhalation. I would report it to his doctor tonight...call the office and have the answering service have the on call doctor call you back. See what they think.

If he has any difficulty swallowing or shortness of breath, you need to address that right away by going to ER or 911.

That is interesting to know. Lauri has been saying for some time now that she seems to be breathing very shallow breaths. She doesn't have trouble breathing, just that she doesn't breath very deep unless she consciously thinks about doing it.

He's being checked out by a nurse and a physical therapist every day.. She said he's doing great..She checked his pulse BP resp. etc.

I've never had a patient complain of this but it's a *very interesting* observation. Great you're staying on top of *anything* that could or should be noted by the doctor.

When I gave birth to my DS (c-section), I was given morphine and my voice was very hoarse. I don't know if it was the morphine or not, but I did have hoarseness in my voice.

It's not one that I have heard of, but anything is possible. Different people react differently to medications.

Hello Obi-Wan Pinobi, and please send regards to Laurie.

SSB had morphine after back surgery, and recalled voice issues, but thought from the being knocked out part. Did some searches, and surprised to find that it is actually used to treat some issues of that regard:

Morphine is the medication of choice for palliation of dyspnea (note that specific causes above indicate specific treatments). Morphine works by improving the quality of breathing and decreases both dyspnea and the anxiety that accompanies dyspnea. Nebulized morphine is considered by some to be more effective than oral or injected (parenteral) morphine, but has the potential to cause bronchospasm. Nebulized morphine is contraindicated in patients with COPD because of potential respiratory depression and worsening hypercapnia

Maybe the culpret is another med?

A number of inhalers can cause a hoarse voice

Morphine and derivatives do it to my mom. Every single time.

It does seem to clear up as she gets more active, and when she's dilligent about using little breathing toy-thing they always give you in the hospital

I'm pretty sure it was the morphine...He took his maximum dosage at 2 PM because physical therapy was coming..His voice was really hoarse all afternoon and into the early evening/..At around 8, the time it wore of his voice went back to normal. He has had n o morphine since 2 PM yesterday and his voice was fine all night...I just gace him half of his maximum dosage about 10 minutes ago..
He was able to go all night without pain meds,so his pain level is going way down now.
