Thinking of flying in a day early, arriving around 10pm, and staying at the airport hotel, and taking ME the next morning to AKL. If we don't tag our luggage can we do this

Absolutely. No, they never check anything but what resort you're going to. All Disney resort guests are entitled to transportation from the MCO airport to their resort on the first day of their resort stay. You earned that by paying for the resort, not the flight. Just have your bands or your ME letter, and off you'll go.

I have similar question, we are staying at wdw for 5 days then want transportation to MCO the day before we depart on a cruise. Planning to stay the night before cruise at the Airport Hyatt, meeting up with son and his wife before our cruise next day. Do I need to give ME a fake flight number so they will transport us from resort to airport day before cruise? Already have DCL transfers to and from cruise and airport. thanks for the help.

Cruises are different because it's not Magical Express, but rather DCL transfers, which you have to purchase. No, you won't need fake flight info for that. You just need to buy the transfers.

Let me try again: We will use ME to get from MCO to WDW resort. After 4 nt stay need to get back to airport to spend night at Airport Hyatt. Not actually flying out or going to cruise until next day. Already have DCL transfers booked for airport to cruise next day and on return. Should I give a fake flight number for travel from wdw to airport after resort stay to avoid confusion?

No need for a fake flight number, just tell the DME people what time you need to be at the airport.

You don't need to "game the system" by giving then a fake flight. DME is a very simple service that way too many people try to make way too complicated.

The facts are:
1) as a WDW resort guest, you are entitled to a trip from MCO to your resort
2) as a WDW resort guest, you are entitled to a trip from your resort to MCO
3) those trips can be ANYTIME between your check-in day and your check-out day (inclusive)
4) those trips can be in any order
5) you do not have to use both segments
6) each person on a resort reservation can have a different trip schedule (#3 still applies)
7) DME really doesn't care about your flights (or lack thereof) and is not going to check up on you
7A) From MCO, any flight info you give them just helps them to plan appropriately - they aren't looking for specific people at specific times
7B) Going to MCO, the flight info is so they can schedule your pick up in time to get you to the airport to make your flight. BUT that's the default process.
8) you can always call DME and arrange a different time for pick up at your resort (although they will strongly caution you to not do anything less than the standard 3 hour pick up)

So, yes, you can easily do what you want to do. Just call them and schedule the ride to MCO for a time that works for you. The DME folks are very efficient and very accommodating. Their phone number is (866) 599-0951.

Our flight lands at MCO at 11:15pm and I have no desire to take DME to the AKL at that hour...that won't put us to the resort until almost 1am. We decided to book a room at the airport Hyatt (was $190, now up to $350:scared1:) and we will catch a DME bus in the morning. When I made our DME reservation (online), I simply put flight information for a flight that arrives around 9:30am since that is the time we are going to try to head down to the bus.

People make it complicated because back a few years ago reps did require flight info. Even now people will run into a rep that thinks you need flight info.

I don't doubt that.

My first direct contact with the DME customer service folks was back in 2008. I had an odd (to me, not to them) situation come up while at WDW. That phone call was enlightening. The most important thing I took away from it was the rep telling me to "never believe anything that a Disney CM tells me about DME - they just don't know how it works and make all kinds of (erroneous) assumptions. Always call DME directly if you have a question."

The Disney CMs are still generally the first (and usually the only) connection people have to DME and while I'm sure it's gotten a bit better than it was 10 years ago, there is still a lot of misinformation being disseminated.

Yep @Fangorn is spot on. It's as simple as every resort guest is entitled to one trip from MCO and one trip to MCO on DME. How and when you use them is up to you. Kind of like dining plan credits.

I once rode DME back to WDW from the airport after returning a rental car, they just asked "were you returning a car" and put me on a bus.
