Alot of people do not realize how difficult it is to manage. Playing games is a requirement of a good manager. Trust me, the way I help motivate the very religious vegitarian is comletely different than how I help motivate the single mother who must leave at a specific time everyday. If you can't understand and step into their shoes, how can they ever feel satisified with their job.
For a long time I refused to play the game, until I saw what the game was! It was a training program. That doesn't mean I lied, but I did learn more about what motivated my boss. I used that knowledge to motivate him to promote me.
I just promoted 2 people. They were not brown-nosers but they were watchers that could work with anyone. They said hello to everyone, laughed with people, and offered a shoulder (on break) when someone was going through a bad time. They also had the knowledge, skills and experience to supervise others.
