Does freon smell?

For a couple of days our kitchen SMELLS. I have washed the floor, bleached the counters, cleaned the fridge, garbage is out.Now can freon leak from a fridge and smell? Its electric and about 5-6 years old?

No. If it were a large leak and brought oil out with it you may smell the oil. But if that were the case the unit would not be cooling. When refrigerant leaks out it evaporates away.

my DH (who is a mechanic) says freon only has a very slight smell, so unless freon were just literally pouring from you refrigerator, you likely wouldn't notice it. something may have gotten onto the refrigerator's coils, and is burning off and producing the smell.
