Do we all get a tip coupon envelope in our stateroom before the last day or do we have to go to guest services to have tips charged to our account?

Everyone gets the envelopes. I go to GS and charge them, then put the tickets in the cards that we bring onboard that allow us to personally thank those who made the trip special. I bring extras to leave notes at GS if other CMs made the cruise special, as well as include their names on the comment card.

The envelopes come in your room but you do have to go to guest services to get them charged on your account. They will give you the slip there. Then you just put it in the envelope instead of cash and hand them out.

They put the charge form and the envelopes in each cabin on the morning of the last full day. If you wish to charge your tips (and get the coupons), you just complete and sign the form and place it in the drop box outside of GS--no need to stand in line, no hassles. Within a few hours, the coupons will be in your room.

You CAN choose to go to GS before that morning and charge tips--you'll get the coupons then. Your host won't know you've done that, so you will still get the form. Just ignore it.

One difference--if you are on the MAGIC, the tips will be automatically charged and you will get the coupons unless you go to GS and make other arrangements.

On our Feb dream cruise they would not let us pay them at GS--they said the forms would be in the cabin, and sure enough, they already were when we got back to the room. Its a basic form we filled out and then the next day the tickets came back in an envelope with the 4 little envelopes as well.

easy !

That's odd that they did that since at GS they can just give you the form to fill out and then make the charges from there.

This must have changed because we did not get any forms on the Dream in January and have been on the Magic 5 times before , maybe 2 years ago and we always used cash with no problem. Never been charged automatically. :confused3

Yes, this changed when the Magic was in the Med last and has remained in place on that ship only.

that's odd that one of the ships charges automatically and the other don't. I dont think I would mind necessarily if they charged us automatically. It would be one less thing to think about.

It came about because of different tipping customs in Europe vs the U.S. The CMs on the Mediterrean cruise were getting "stiffed" so Disney implemented the auto-charge just for the Magic and kept it in place after returning to the U.S.

The Magic started the auto tipping thing on their last Med season. There was a problem on previous Med cruises that a large number of cruisers were not tipping (mostly because in Europe, tipping isn't the norm).

I guess they felt it was easier to keep the computer set up for auto tipping on the Magic. Maybe they are testing to see if it's a better system than just letting everyone tip on their own. I know many other cruiselines have a "hotel service charge" automatically charged every day to you account that's really the tips.

OK! Just saw a new thread:

Due to the success of a pilot program on Disney Magic ® and positive feedback from Guests, Disney Cruise Line ® is introducing the auto-application of gratuities on all Disney ships.
The process will create a more seamless experience for your Clients by automatically charging folios on embarkation day with the suggested gratuity amounts for the Server, Assistant Server, Head Server and Stateroom Host/Hostess.

Below are the effective dates:

• Disney Dream - Date to be announced
• Disney Fantasy - April 21, 2012
• Disney Magic - Already in place
• Disney Wonder ® - April 22, 2012

Clients can add pre-paid gratuities at the time of booking or when processing final payment. If the pre-paid gratuities have not been added prior to boarding, your Clients will receive a letter upon check-in explaining the automatic charge to their onboard account. Your Clients still have the option to modify or add additional gratuity amounts, or pay in cash, by stopping by the Guest Services Desk onboard.
As a reminder, a 15% gratuity is automatically added to any bar, beverage, wine and deck-service receipt.
