Does DVC ever upgrade for free?

DH and I checked into HHIR earlier this week. We booked a 1 BR since just 2 of us. They upgraded us to a 2 BR in my favorite building 13. We just closed the door to the second BR but loving the space and the view. This is our home resort so I can just imagine there was a cancellation or someone wanted a 1BR and we got picked to move up.

Happy for you getting building 13! Nice view and also covered parking!

I've stayed a week in January and a week in March in the past at HH and loved it because it was so nice and quiet. I had my grands with me before they started regular school and the CM's were so good to them. I don't think there were any other kids there during our January trip.

Hopefully your weather is nice! It's raining here in Maryland and I would trade it for rain in HH in a minute!

I booked a DVC room thru WDW at AKL. The 1 bedroom was nowhere near the standards of past Deluxe rooms of any kind. The washer/dryer’s interior was mildewed and needed to be replaced (this was done on day 3), the ADA shower stall’s shower hose was inoperable and required a part that couldn’t be located until day 3, part of my luggage (mostly food. Sigh) went missing for 4 days and the room was definitely ready for its upgrade.
Not how I planned to spend the last days of ‘24 and the start of ‘25. To add the perfect cherry to the top, the Front Office CM was… not the best person for the job. You know how WDW surveys ask if you’d hire the person you spoke with on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 the lowest? She was good as a zero.

Nowww that I got that off my chest, I’m being offered an upgraded room the next time I book so yeah they do but most people don’t want it the way I acquired the offer 😱

Weather here is good - mid 60s and sunshine. Youngsters swimming (not me!). We leave Monday to begin driving back to MD.

Yes we got an upgrade at BLT because we were staying in the refurbished room last month and our heater was not working and they told us that 50% of the heaters were having issues. They moved us from standard to lake view

Upgrade example in Cali:
We are at DCA Moonlight Magic now. A little confusing on getting tickets but everything worked out. They overbooked the DVC rooms and gave us the presidential suite with a connecting extra bedroom in the concierge level. We were already staying in standard rooms in concierge but booked 1 night in a 2-bedroom villa to do Moonlight Magic. Of course we are not complaining about our upgrade to the presidential Suite

Have been a DVC member since 2011 and has been the recipient of several upgrades. The one that sticks out the most is when my wife booked 2 studios at Jumbo with the stipulation that they have an adjoining door--we were traveling with my daughters family and they had 2 young children. The year before we had stayed at Poly and had 2 studios with adjoining door and the grand kids loved going back an forth between the 2 rooms. Turns out there are no studios at Jumbo with adjoining door, so they upgraded us to a 2 bedroom in Kidani -- it was love at first site. I am not exaggerating is stating there was more Sq Ft in the 2 bedroom then my wife and I's first 2 bedroom house. Every time since when we travel with another family we get the 2 bedroom at Kidani. As the grand kids have gotten older, the third bathroom is even more appreciated.

Turns out there are no studios at Jumbo with adjoining door,
For benefit of someone new to DVC who might read this, the only DVC resorts that have connecting studios are the Poly Deluxe Studios in the longhouses (the original Poly DVC buildings) and the VGF Resort Studios in the Big Pine Key building. The reason is that they’re both conversions of regular hotel buildings. In the DVC resorts that were built as DVC buildings, plus CCV even though it’s also a hotel conversion, studios connect to 1BR villas to create 2BR lockoff villas.

Are the other dvc buildings for vgf the same looking inside as the big pine key? That's the building they put us in, I didn't know it was the conversion

There’s only one other VGF building, the original one next to the Wedding Pavilion. I’m not sure what you mean about “the same looking inside” but the decor is similar, very elegant - see photos here https://www.disboards.com/media/categories/grand-floridian-villa.454/ and else via internet search.
