Does Disney Still Not Allow Same Sex Unions?

Hi Everyone~

Let me start by saying im not looking for a debate here.

I know 3 years ago (when we were planning) I was floored to hear Disney didn’t do same sex unions (which they called marriage) as it "did not promote family values, or meet state guidelines" However I heard lately that they do, although I haven’t found any proof of it. I was hoping somebody here may know. My dream would of been to have our ceremony there.

Its a shame that people on both side of the situation (gay and religious/government) cant just come to an agreement on this topic. I personally don’t get why gay people insist on "marriage". Marriage is religious, and i think should be between a man and women. What i want is all the same rights, and benefits, which comes out of a legal ceremony. Call it a "union" "ceremony" or "film flam" for all i care. I don’t get why both sides have to be so stubborn.

So...umm....yea... does Disney do that now? LOL! :rotfl2:

Hello!

From what I understand the way that Disney went about not letting same sex unions take place was by requiring proof of a marriage liscence or a certificate in order to have the ceremony. I do know this is still a requirement. Let us know if you find out anything, though. I personally would be really interested to know also. My friend and his boyfriend are vacationing with us, and he was asking about this too.

Good luck!
Ashley

I forget why, but this issue came up when we were meeting with our sales manager in 2003. She told us that as long as same sex couples can't get a marriage lisence from the state of florida, they won't do a same sex union. I can't imagine that stance hasn't changed. I think Disney wants to stay out of the politics of it all.

Now, an interesting question would be if a same sex couple who got married in MA could have a VR in Disney? For a vow renewal to take place Disney/the officiant requires a copy of the original marriage license. A same sex couple who had a ceremony in MA would meet that requirement...

HM--I do think that is an interesting option to go around it...I would imagine that Disney CAN'T allow same sex unions if Florida won't allow it. The same reason why they have to follow the Florida family relations law on who can perform the marriage for any given couple...but a vow renewal seems like a good option...

This is off subject but what is the requirement for someone to perform a ceremony> My fiance's cousin is a minister in Mississippi, will that work?

Yup

The requirement is any religiously empowered person, or a state of florida notary or judge. If you have something that you want to double check, check the website for the county from which your license is from...they simplify the statute in layman terms

Ok whos gonna call and ask? lol

I looked on their weddings webpage but theres no email.

I can't help with the WDW part, but I completely agree with this statement.

I have to say i agree with that also. A friend of a friend recently died in a car accident and he had been livingwith his partner for the last 10 years but because they were not legally "married" he had no right to anything in the will.

I wouldn't email a specific coordinator as they are all assinged after your first contact with DFTW. As far as I know, there is no general info email address for DFTW, so your best bet to find out is to call (and to go through the proper channels).

I asked my wedding coordinator this question in December and she said that Disney still do not allow same sexed couples to have ceremonies in Disney.

I found this quote on the Disney Weddings website:

What documents will I need for my Disney Vow Renewal?
Proof of your valid marriage license is required prior to hosting your ceremony at the Walt Disney World® Resort. Sorry, but passports are not acceptable as proof of marriage.

Ecurto - give them call!! Why can't ALL of our Disney dreams come true? I just don't understand how people can be so against people loving each other and wanting to build and share a life together. :guilty: Let alone entering into a legal partnership. I wish you and your spouse a beautiful, long life together and the best of luck.

On your anniversary!!!! My hubby and I also celebrating our anniversary on October 10th......................IN DISNEYWORLD!!!! This will be 12 years for us and I still cant beleive it, we still feel like newlyweds!!!! Maybe some pixie dust will fly your way and you guys can spend your anniversary in WDW too!!! Who knows, maybe we will see you two there!!! ok, now the real response to your post.............I agree about trying to do the Vow Renewal thing too. I wish that Disney was more liberal. It is odd though that they would "allow" the annual "gay day" but not a cival union. Hopefully things will change...........good luck in finding your info and again, congrats on the upcoming anniversary!!!!

The thing with Disney is, they have parties and events there all the time, many of which have a lot of the same/similar features that a wedding reception would have. So if you wanted to have a reception through Disney, essentially you could. Just as long as you didn't call it a "reception", per se. The only thing is, you would need to have your ceremony at another location. Before we had to postpone our wedding plans, DH2B & I were actually considering having our ceremony (w/about 20-25 guests) in a either a suite or villa at one of the hotels. We wanted a villa overlooking the water at the Boardwalk or a suite at the Grand Californian at DLR (we live in So Cal) - which we even had booked & the view off the balcony was of DCA. It would be casual, but not jeans/shorts casual. We were going to bring flowers & decorations to dress up the room a bit. Then we wanted to do a dessert pary for either Wishes or Illuminations had we decided on WDW - which we would've needed to go through Disney to plan. Or we were also considering a Mad Hatter Tea Party for brunch the following day.
There are so many possibilities!!!

Good luck!!! :lovestruc

p.s. You & your partner look absolutely adorable together!!!!!

Evidently, no matter their stance, they're still bound by the ridiculous, backwards Florida laws. Here's hoping Florida gets a clue soon.
