Does Disney ever block rooms and release later?

Just wondering if more room become available as dates near? I have a reservation for mid-Niv at the BLT, but have been thinking about changing resorts. The resorts I'm looking at are seemingly booked for the room type (and most other types) for that week. Is that normal? Also, I was hoping that Disney may offer a room discount for my dates, but can't imagine they will as they seem so well booked...ugh! I know some hotels hold rooms from being booked until closer to reservation dates as to be able to accommodate business travelers and potential events....I doubt disney does this, right?

They don't block out rooms for no reason just to be released at a later date. But they do very often have cancellations, so keep checking.

Because room only reservations can be canceled up to 5 days before arrival, it's possible that you could see something open up very close to your arrival. I'm hoping for something like this before I arrive next month.

I noticed you specifically mentioned BLT-if the resorts you are looking to change to are other DVC resorts keep in mind disney Is only able to book a portion of those resorts to cash customers-most of the rooms are tied up in DVC inventory that is booked by DVC membership their points. The cash rooms come from the points disney owns at each resort and when DVC members trade out of their resort to go on a disney cruise or some type of other disney vacation. The rest of the rooms are booked on points and cancellations would normally go back into the DVC member booking pool (under 60 days disney can use that inventory to book cash rooms)So while it is possible to get lucky and have a cancellation pop up due to a cash reservation cancellation but would be much more likely at a Disney hotel where any room cancellation would open up inventory.
As far as disney offering room discounts they did offer them for last fall but BLT was excluded

Thank you. We loved the BLT when we stayed there in 2013, but I'm thinking it might be nice to mix it up a little for this trip. Beach Club seems like a nice alternative with Epcot and the Boardwalk being so close. The Beach Club has had no openings for a 1 bedroom but it is also a DVC property so maybe that is part of the reason. Oh well.

In 2013 we did get a room discount at BLT. We had booked as a package. I was thrilled. It seems these discounts, including the free dining, no longer apply to the BLT. It's very expensive to stay there without a discount. We already booked our airfare so I can't change my dates to get what I want at another resort.

**we were also upgraded to a theme park view without asking back in 2013. Maybe April was a better month than Nov for BLT.

Thanks again

Try Orbitz. I can't swear they have different availability, but they seem to buy blocks at a low price and often sell the rooms at the lower price longer than Disney does.

Yes they do. This is done at all the conference resorts CSR etc. They will hold a block of rooms for the conference and whatever rooms are not reserved by a specific date will be released to the public.
