a friend wants to come on the cruise I am going on, I already have multiple rooms for my party, but they want to be near us.

unfortunately, they are a group of 4, including, at the time, a 2 year old, who they want in a crib. since it will take up just as much room either way, can they get a room that only officially sleeps 3, and be near us?

I thought so, of course they would actually fit the same either way...

The issue isn't just sleeping space. It's also an issue of lifeboat capacity. A baby (toddler) counts as a person no matter where they sleep. If the room states it only accommodates 3, then they will not allow 3 plus a toddler.

Also remember that the cruise fare includes food, not just room, which is why it is per person, not per room. Also cruise staterooms are quite small; smaller than most hotel rooms, so a crib might not even fit.
