I'm not a fan of Avatar. It felt like a rehash of long-told stories, and the visuals (while impressive) looked unintentionally cartoonish to me. Idk the box office figures (domestic or international), but like others have mentioned, Avatar doesn't seem to have nearly the cultural impact that either Star Wars or Harry Potter have had.

However, I'm excited to have a new area of AK to explore, to have a couple new (hopefully innovative) rides to go on, and for AK to be open later. I've heard of plenty of people who aren't HP fans but are blown away by what Universal has done with the theming and rides; and I'm hoping WDW does something similarly impressive with Avatarland.

Yes, I am really excited!
We first went to Universal the year after Harry Potter's castle was built. I never had an interest in the books/movies and thought to myself, why are all these kids going crazy about Harry Potter?!?! Well, after we went there and rode the ride and walked through the world, it was like something sparked my interest and I just had to watch the movies and read the books! And now I am one of those people who go crazy for Harry Potter! With that being said, I loved Avatar when it first came out so now I am very excited to see how they are going to transform the area. Plus if it is Disney, I'm sure it will be very magical!

That movie is already old by industry standards... By the time this is even built, if it will be, it's going to be even older! Move on find some new movie and grab on to that!
Avatarland will debut at or around the time of Avatar 2.0. Then, soon thereafter, there will be Avatar 3.0 and Avatar 4.0. Look at it this way. Disney has said that SW Expansion ("SWE") will be based on the yet-to-be-released movies. And there will be three of those. So when you compare the two franchises, which "land" will be operational in closer to real time as the movies being released, Avatar or SWE? The next SW movie comes out in a matter of months. You won't be riding a new SW attraction before 2020. The next Avatar movie is set for release in 2016. (And you can probably make that 2017 given Cameron's track record). You will be riding the new Avatar attractions contemporaneous with that movie. By comparison, the next SW movie will be 4-5 years old before you ride on a new SW attraction.

I'm still confused as to why they are doing Avatar land. Seems like a money pit to me. I'm sure they're out there somewhere, but I don't know any kids or even adults who are big Avatar "fans". Especially now that the movie is 6 years old. It's like - who cares? Do people care?

Not excited at all. Curious about what the heck they're doing back there - what could it possibly even be? Animatronic 8 legged horses and lots of purple and blue glowy foliage?

Of all things for them to invest in. Avatar.

Just. Wow.

It's because there are 3 movies coming out. but I agree, not the best investment, IMO.

I can't wait for Avatar!!! Will be amazing and should look incredible at night time!!!
Although I love the movie, even if Avatar wasn't attached to the project and was an overall fantasy project offering the same, I'd feel no different.

After my upcoming trip, I do not plan to visit WDW until after this is completed. Probably 2018 if all is well.

I do have to wonder if Disney will end up adding Avatar full fledged like Star Wars, Indiana, Muppets, etc. I'm sure.

This is how I feel. I'm not an Avatar fan but the rides and land sound interesting to me. I'll be interested to see it.

And
Funny, I've not seen the movie Avatar because our child was born the same year and I'm not a movie buff who needed to see it.

I saw it 36 weeks pregnant. I had to leave for the bathroom twice. I was not committed enough, lol.

Okay, this is, I am guessing, the updated look into avatar land posted from the Disney blog. they also had a short video showing James Cameron working with Imagineers to see how everything is going to look and interact.

I still feel like it might be a flop, but it definitely looks cool.

Ditto - if the new land is well done, it will be a success. And that success would have come even had there been no movie in the first place, and even if the later movies don't do well.
I'm looking forward to it because a lot of effort is being put into it to make something interesting, and I'll be disappointed if it's not well done, regardless of what I thought of the movie.

The interactive illuminated pathways look amazing.

Avatar is about a beautiful world centered around nature. It's the best 3D visually movie. There's tons of ideas for cool rides. Animal kingdom is centered around nature and wildlife. It needs an expansion and more rides. So therefore I don't see a better movie franchise to incorporate into AK.

The first movie was a huge success. I'm sure the following ones will be just as big. And I don't see any way that the movies or park flops. It's a win for AK.

Yes, but not in a way I can discuss in polite company.

I never saw Avatar and don't plan to. Wish WDW had left AK for the animals but we'll see how new area turns out.

I would understand if they want a bit more 'fantasy' in AK, because there us a dragon on the logo. But it could also be their excuse. IMHO AK did need something added to bring more attention back.
