Does anything help a pinched nerve in your back?

Starting yesterday I just thought I had a "knot" in my back. Now I am thinking its a pinched nerve because every now and then it just takes your breath away.

Does anything help this or is it something that just goes away?? Its awful!:scared1:

heating pad maybe? I am having a back issue right under my shoulder which started without warning - constant pain. Nothing is helping yet - massage, hot water, lying flat. I'm going to Target after work for a heating pad.

I had one that went away after taking prescription anti-inflammatory meds. It caused horrible sciatica before it was over.

I now have one on both sides of my neck. One side was aggravated by Rockin Roller Coaster of all things. It's been bothering me since last June.

Is something going around? Only yesterday someone else posted about a constant pain in her upper back.

First aid: muscle relaxants and pain killers specifically intended for the back(there are a few over-the-counter meds available). Heat pads. Ice pack to bring down the swelling.

Next step: see a doctor and a chiropractor. The doctor should be able to diagnose whether it's a pulled muscle, a pinched nerve or (unlikely) a slipped disk, and can prescribe stronger medicine (if needed). A chiropractor can try to ease things back to where they should be. You may need to visit the chiropractor more than once; I've had a lower back problem for about a week (a pulled muscle), with things definitely looking better, and I have the third and I hope final visit to the chiropractor tomorrow. (FYI, my co-payment is 15 dollars a visit, which I regard as money very well spent.)

Long range: check with an expert to see if your pain is in any way related to the work you do. If you have a desk job, or you spend a lot of time on the computer (DISing, perhaps?) you might need to adjust your chair, your posture and the position of the computer monitor, as well as a few other things. Also, the doctor, the chiropractor or - as another PP mentioned in replying to yesterday's post, someone at a gym - would be able to suggest some exercises to strengthen your stomache, back and butt muscles, all of which help to support your spine, and keep those pains from returning.

I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Go to a chiropractor.

Go to a chiropractor.

Ditto! I was almost crippled by a severely pinched nerve. When it happened, I literally couldn't move my legs. My Chiropractor saved me. I never took any meds or anything. Just find a highly recommended one. I would personally drive you to the one I have now, who is a miracle to me, if you lived by me!

Anthing else will only treat the symptom, not the cause.

My last pinched nerve was managed by my doc and chiropractor. The doc prescribed muscle relaxers amd prednisone, the chiropractor adjusted me and used both ultrasound and electric stim. It took several months to completely go away. The last thing to go wasn't the pain, it was the tingling and numbness from my shoulder down into my fingers.

Physical therapy really helps me when my sciatica gets growly.....also my back pain meds and muscle relaxants. :)
