Just wondering... I'm applying for a job with the State and was wondering what they were like to work for.

I did for just over a year, about 5 years ago. I worked for DHMH. What are you looking at and at what location?

I just took the state test and did well, best qualified for about 10 different job titles. I don't have a degree, but have about 15 years of secretarial/administative experience. I was checking out their website yesterday and actually saw a position in the DHMH (Dept. Health & Mental Hygiene right?). Anyway, I guess I was wondering what it was like to work for the State, good experience, bad, etc. You only worked there for a year, why, did you not like it, why did you leave?

Saw your post and was curious also. I recently applied for a job with the Dept. of Human Resources. Only thing I have done so far was applying. Deadline was last week. Haven't heard anything yet. This one was in Cecil County. Do you hear soon after deadline whether they want you to do testing and so forth? Good luck with your job hunting.

I do. I work for DHR in a county Department of Social Services. I worked for the state for 11 years then quit to stay home with my kids and now I'm back again. I have a degree and work in Child Welfare so I'm not sure what I can answer for secretarial positions but the benefits are pretty decent and I have had good supervisors. I think that can be subjective though. I don't use the medical benefits because hubby is federal and we use his but there are many plans to choose from. If there is a specific question regarding secretarial or administrative jobs, I can ask the ladies in my county their opinions. They've been with Maryland for over 5 years (they just got their 5 yr pins at our last all-staff meeting).

Thought I'd answer this one directly. In our county we've had a time getting secretarial positions filled because of the testing requirement. Because all the testing is done in Baltimore City, not many of those who have taken the test want to drive down to southern Maryland so headquarters gave permission to advertise positions locally. After placing an ad in the local newspapers in October, we had nearly 60 people apply and then those applicants were contacted and informed of the Baltimore City testing. Of the original 58 or so applicants, only 4 agreed to go to Baltimore to take the required testing. This is a long-drawn out process. I suggest you send in an application directly to DHR and they will send you notice of the testing dates and then you will be placed on a list of available applicants to the counties you indicate you would consider.

The list of available jobs is found here: http://www.dhr.state.md.us/jobannc.htm

You can download the State of Md application here:

Good luck.

I didn't realize the testing was in Baltimore either. I will wait to see if they ask me first then decide if I should go to Baltimore. It is only an hour away. Thanks so much for responding.

I will comment on the test since I just took it. The test was very easy I thought. Just some logic stuff and some math, but not hard at all. There is also a typing portion, which some job titles require, you need to be able to type 40 wpm. I got my results back a week later and best qualified... you either qualify, better qualify or best qualify... or I guess you can fail and not qualify at all.
