My mom is currently going through training in MN to be a flight attendant for NWA. She wasn't really sure about the travel benefits and if her children are able to fly free or how it works. Anyone know?

BIL works for NWA...he is ground crew in KC, MO.

Basically--they fly standby for a discounted rate (like maybe $25 or so for coach--something like $50 or so for first class..though they must be dressed business casual to fly in that cabin.). They don't really get free tickets--maybe once a year as an incentive or just an end of the year reward.

The standby extends to their immediate family--spouse/domestic partner and children (years ago, a friend of mine was able to have her mom travel with her..not sure if it extends in that manner).

ETA: I just e-mailed my sister for a better, more specific answer to your question.

I don't know about NW, but I work for AA. Dependents up to age 18 (through age 22 if full-time student) can fly have the same boarding priority as an employee, after that age there are a set number of passes per year that can be used by whomever the employee allows.

Response from my sister:

They will have the fly perks but...it is so hard to fly stand-by these days it easier to just buy a ticket. Also they get 30% off purchased tickets...

parents and children...
Standby and sometimes ________will receive a Celebration pass, which is positive space on a round-trip ticket in the 48 states...not Hawaii or Alaska.

So you can travel with your mom--but it is standby or the discounted ticket for her as well as her family.

Thanks for the reply! That might be a little difficult traveling standby with a baby and an 8 year old! It's nice that they offer a discount though. My mom actually lives in MI, and I live in NY, so I was just thinking ahead for when we go to visit her and the rest of my family.

I will say that they get very creative on the travel when they dont want to spend a lot of money. But as I said--if they NEED to be some place, they just buy the ticket.

My DB is a NW pilot, my parents quality to fly standby (I don't) but they have just about given up on it, since they often sit in the Minneapolis airport for 24-48 hrs to get a flight!
